LAST TIME OUT:

The BayBears raced out to a three-run lead and held on to defeat the Lookouts 3-2 Saturday night. LUIS DIAZ kept Chattanooga's bats quiet. He recorded eight strikeouts, one shy of his career-high. The Lookouts left 10 men on base and went 3-for-14 with runners in scoring position, ultimately proving to be the difference in the game. Chattanooga loaded the bases in each of the final three frames and, despite scoring a pair of runs in the eighth, could not complete the comeback. RONNIE MUCK helped Mobile escape an eighth-inning jam, and then he struck out two batters to get out of trouble in the ninth.

STARTING STRONG:

Starting pitching has been extremely effective for the BayBears in the opening series. TYLER CARPENTER and LUIS DIAZ both tossed six innings of two-hit, shutout ball. Carpenter, Diaz, and OSMER MORALES have combined to allow just two runs on nine hits in 17 innings of work. The trio has also struck out 19 Chattanooga hitters while issuing just one walk.

HALO AND WELCOME:

After announcing a new two-year Player Development Contract with the Angels during the offseason, the BayBears enter the 2017 season as one of two Southern League teams with a new parent club. It is the third Major League club the BayBears have been affiliated with in team (1997-present). Over the past 10 seasons, more than 70 players from the Arkansas Travelers, the previous Double-A affiliate of the Angels since 2001, made it to the Majors, including five-time All-Star and two-time American League MVP Mike Trout.

FAMILIAR FACES:

With the affiliation change, a whole new group of players are making their BayBears debuts this year. However, right-handed pitchers BRANDON PETERSON and ABEL DE LOS SANTOS are not new to the Southern League. Peterson is squaring off against his former team, the Lookouts, after spending parts of the last two seasons with Chattanooga. De Los Santos finished the 2016 Minor League season with Pensacola, going 1-2 with a 1.54 ERA in 17 games. He earned a September call-up to the Cincinnati Reds.

SALUTE TO SAL:

In addition to the BayBears joining forces with the Angels, this is also the Mobile skipper's first season working for the parent club. SAL FASANO enters his seventh season in coaching overall after an 11-year career as a catcher in the big leagues. After breaking into the coaching ranks at the helm of the Lansing Lugnuts in 2010, Fasano won Eastern League Manager of the Year in 2011, leading Double-A New Hampshire to a league championship. He has spent the past two seasons as the Pitching Coordinator for the Blue Jays.

BUDDY BY THE BAY:

Former BayBear and Major League pitcher BUDDY CARLYLE returns to the Port City as a member of the coaching staff for the first time in his career. The BayBears new pitching coach spent parts of nine seasons in the Majors, including stints with the Padres, Dodgers, Braves, Yankees, and Mets. Carlyle helped lead the 1998 BayBears to a Southern League Championship, and the squad was named America's Minor League Team of the Year by Baseball America.

BACK IN ‘BAMA:

Although there are no Alabama natives on the BayBears roster, catcher WADE WASS was born and raised in nearby Pensacola, Fla., and played college baseball at the University of Alabama (2013-2014). In 2014, Wass slashed .302/.388/.462 and led the Crimson Tide with 19 doubles. He hit five home runs, collected 34 RBI, and landed a spot on the All-SEC Second Team.

HAMMERIN' AT THE HANK:

When the BayBears return home Wednesday, a recently-renovated Hank Aaron Stadium awaits. Together with the City of Mobile, several areas of the stadium were overhauled and upgraded prior to the upcoming season. This includes over 1,300 new box seats, an upgraded drainage system in the outfield, a new digital line scoreboard, and additional protective netting to enhance fan safety.

TEJADA ON A TEAR:

Infielder LUIS TEJADA is off to a hot start to begin the season, his first as a member of the Angels organization. After going 2-for-4 with a solo home run and a double on Opening Day, he recorded another multi-hit game Friday. Tejada is 4-for-11 with eight total bases.

OPPOSING STARTER:

Felix Jorge gets the start for the Lookouts today, entering his seventh pro season...Jorge has been named a Mid-Season All-Star each of the past two years in the Midwest League and the Florida State League...He was also a Baseball America Class A-Advanced All-Star in 2016, going 9-3 with a 1.55 ERA (16 ER in 93.0 IP) in 14 starts with Fort Myers...Jorge was promoted to Chattanooga on July 7, 2016 and posted a 4.12 ERA with a 3-5 record in 11 starts...The 23-year-old is the No. 9 prospect in the Twins farm system, according to MLB Pipeline (one of five Lookouts pitchers in the Top 10)... The Dominican native was signed by Minnesota as a non-drafted free agent on February 21, 2011...REPERTOIRE: Fastball (90-95), curve (76-80), slider (81-85), change (81-84).
