Youngstown Phantoms News Release

YOUNGSTOWN, OH - For the first time in over two years, the Youngstown Phantoms recorded a shutout, blanking the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders 3-0 at the Covelli Centre Saturday night. Owen Bartoszkiewicz stopped all 35 Cedar Rapids shots that he faced on the way to his first USHL shutout. Youngstown was playing two players short in their lineup and lost another playing in the third period, but still managed to keep the visitors off the board. It was the Phantoms' first shutout since Dominic Basse had a clean sheet against the Green Bay Gamblers in a 1-0 win on November 29, 2019.

"(Bartoszkiewicz's performance) was huge. He really came through in the clutch when we needed him," said Phantoms Head Coach Brad Patterson. "In the second half of the game, we had a lot of guys who were really running out of gas and running on fumes. When that happens, you're going to start to give up things and break down a little bit. We tried to keep them as perimeter as possible, and 'Bart' made some timely saves."

Youngstown got all the offense they would need just 6:35 into the first period. After Ryan Alexander stole a clearing attempt by the RoughRiders, his cross-ice pass bounced off Shane LaChance and found Evan Werner alone in front of the net. Werner switched to the backhand and fired a shot past Connor Hasley (20 saves) to put the Phantoms ahead 1-0. It was Werner's sixth goal of the season, all of which have come in the last eight games. "(Evan) is a dangerous player," said Patterson. "When the puck is on his stick specifically. He's got a great shot, he's also got great hands in tight...We missed him last night, glad to have him back."

The Phantoms doubled their lead with a breakaway goal from Adam Ingram at the 14:12 mark of the second. A bump pass from Wallace in the neutral zone found Ingram in full flight. Ingram swung out to the left and cut across the net mouth as he came towards the cage, sliding a backhander through Hasley's five hole for his team-leading 16th goal of the season. "(Ingram) is hot right now, that's for sure," said Patterson. Ingram has points in 22 of the 26 games he's played this season and has scored in all three games since Dubuque snapped his 16-game scoring streak on December 11.

Youngstown capped off the scoring at the 5:44 mark of the third period when LaChance redirected Ingram's shot behind Hasley for a power play goal. It was LaChance's third goal of the season, second of the weekend, and marked at least one power play goal for Youngstown in all six games they've played against Cedar Rapids this season. The Phantoms' power play ended the night 1-for-4, while the Cedar Rapids power play was 0-for-3 and 0-for-8 on the weekend. Cedar Rapids was the beneficiary of a major power play when Nick Williams was called for spearing at 6:27 of the third, but the RoughRiders could not find a way to crack Bartoszkiewicz.

The Phantoms take to the road for the next four games with stops in Chicago on January 14-15 and Muskegon on January 21-22 before returning to the Covelli Centre for three games in three days against the U17's January 28-30.
