Barrie Colts Reach 37,500 Meals Donated to Those in Need

June 19, 2020 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Barrie Colts News Release

The Barrie Colts prepared and donated a total of 37,500 meals to those in need since the COVID crisis hit in early March. Today was the last day of the program that provided meals to community organizations, such as: The David Busby Street Centre, Salvation Army Barrie Bayside Mission, Women and Children's Shelter Barrie, Youth Haven, Barrie Food Bank, Hospice Simcoe, and others.

When COVID-19 isolation began, many local organizations were faced with new challenges in feeding the people they normally served. When some people had to be moved from shelters into hotels due to isolation and safety issues, feeding them each day became a challenge as usual methods were unable to be used and volunteers faced new challenges in helping prepare meals.

"I'm so proud of what we have been able to provide to the community during this most unusual time. Our Food & Beverage Manager, Sean Kehoe, has done an incredible job with this program and our staff have come in and taken turns to package the meals. It's because of our amazing fans that we have been able to do this. This is one example of where the money from our 50/50 ticket sales go. All of the people who bought 50/50 tickets at our games are the ones who have made this happen. Over $100,000 was donated from The Barrie Colts Community Fund to purchase the food required", said Barrie Colts President, Howie Campbell.

"We are incredibly grateful for all that The Barrie Colts have done for us. They stepped up and provided us with amazing support at a time when we needed it most", said Lucy Growers of Youth Haven.

"Thanks to The Colts team. We are very appreciative of the support that has helped so many of our women and children", added Teresa MacLennan, Executive Director Women & Children's Shelter Barrie.

Peter Sundborg of Barrie Food Bank had this to say, "Thank you for all of the good you have provided to the community with over 37,500 meals. We really appreciate your amazing support".

In addition to the $100,000 that came from the Barrie Colts Community Fund, generous donations of food came in from No Frills, one of our valued sponsors, as well as Zehrs Supermarkets. Scotiabank, another valued corporate partner, donated funds to help purchase food. Rockbrune Movers and AMJ Campbell donated boxes to allow us the delivery of the meals.

The Barrie Colts Community Fund supports various charities in the community. We always strive to support the community that supports us.
