Banged-up Dodgers Fall to Manatees

April 22, 2004 - Florida State League (FSL1)
Vero Beach Devil Rays News Release

(Vero Beach, FL) - One night removed from playing perhaps their finest game of the season, the Vero Beach Dodgers failed in their bid to win back-to-back games for the first time this season, dropping an 8-2 decision to the Brevard County Manatees in Viera. LHP Mike Megrew, a highly-touted Dodger prospect, came off the disabled list before the game and started the game, lasting two innings before his pitch count was met. Megrew walked three of the first four batters in the first inning before giving up a bases-clearing triple to RF Frank Diaz to stake the Manatees to a 3-0 lead they would never surrender. The Dodgers got a pair of runs in the second inning on back-to-back two-out singles by C A.J. Ellis and 3B Brett Dowdy. Dowdy was the only Dodger player to have a multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 at the plate, leading the six-hit Dodger attack.

On the night Megrew was activated from the DL, two more Dodger players left the game early with injuries. 1B Brian Sprout exited after being struck by a ground ball, while C Russell Martin left when he was hit by a pitch on the hand.

Friday's game between the Dodgers and Manatees could be a classic in the making if the pitching matchup is any indication. RHP Chad Billingsley, the number six rated prospect in the Dodgers' chain will take the hill for Vero Beach. He will be opposed by RHP Mike Hinckley, the number six prospect himself in the Expos chain. First pitch is slated for 7:05 PM.
