JOLIET, IL-The Joliet JackHammers have announced that manager Wally Backman will return for a second season at the helm of the JackHammers in 2009. Backman returns to a team that went 43-55 this past season. Backman will return with a yet-to-be announced coaching staff.
"I am disappointed with how we finished," said JackHammers manager Wally Backman of his team's 43-53 record, "so I am excited to come back to Joliet and do what I was brought here to do-put a competitive, winning team on the field."
The JackHammers finished in fifth place in the Northern League and had a .298 team batting average, good enough for third place in the league. The club's 5.61 ERA was fourth in the Northern League. The JackHammers also sold the contracts of three players to Major League organizations-RHP Drew Shetrone (Yankees), 1B Freddie Thon (White Sox) and RHP Vince Pekins (Cubs).
