Azcona Lifts Tigers Past Yankees

Norwich, CT - The Connecticut Tigers (14-21) defeated the the Staten Island Yankees (16-18) by a score of 6-4 Tuesday night at Dodd Stadium. The highlight of the game came in the fourth inning from 2B Javier Azcona (1-4) who hit a two run homerun that scored 3B Brett Harrison (1-3) to give the Tigers a 4-1 lead.

Tigers starting pitch LHP Joe Flattery pitched four great innings allowing one run on just two hits and struck out five batters. LHP Ryan Beck picked up the win pitching three innings allowing two unearned runs on five hits. RHP Zac Reininger picked up the save for the Tigers pitching one inning allowing no runs and no hits while striking out one batter. It was Reininger's third save in four opportunities.

The Tigers got contributions from RF Ben Verlander (2-3) who picked up a pair of singles including two RBI's. C Duncan McAlpine (2-3) also added a pair of singles and an RBI. The Tigers went 2-5 with runners in scoring position and left only five batters on base.

It was a rough night for the Yankees with base runners on as they went 0-6 with runners in scoring position and left a total of eight men on base. RF Yeicok Calderon (3-4) was the key contributor for the Yankees picking up three hits including an RBI double in the first inning that gave the Yankees an early 1-0 lead.

The Tigers and the Staten Island Yankees play game two of their three-game seriers at Dodd Stadium tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. In game two LHP Alex Phillips (1-0, 2.76) gets the start for the Tigers. RHP Philip Walby (0-0, 2.16) gets the start for the Yankees. Tomorrow is Family Four Pack night at Dodd Stadium. Get four reserved tickets, four hot dogs, four soda, and a bag of popcorn for just $40 (a $63 value!). Miss USA 2013, Erin Brady will be in attendance to throw out the Ceremonial First Pitch.
