Owen Sound Attack News Release

The Owen Sound Attack are proud to announce a new program called Sticks for Soldiers. At two home games this season the Attack will ask those in attendance to bring a new or gently used hockey stick to donate to soldiers stationed oversees. The Attack will work with the 4th Canadian Division Training Centre's Family Resource Centre in Meaford to collect the sticks at the games and have them packaged up to be sent oversees for the troops to use.

This year collection games will be:

Saturday, September 28th vs. Guelph Storm

Saturday, March 21st vs. Guelph Storm

Last season, the team was approached in mid-March by Retired Colonel Alex Ruff to try and execute this during a playoff game, but the short turn around made it impossible to get everyone on board in time.

"We loved the idea, but just didn't have the time to make it happen last year" said Greg Hoddinott, Manager, Marketing & Communications for the Attack. "The Canadian Hockey League has a long standing relationship with the Canadian Military and this is just another great example of how we and our fans can show our appreciation for the sacrifices these men and women make for us on a daily basis."

The sticks will be a packaged up and shipped oversees to military bases around the world. When deployed abroad, Canadian military members have used the game of road hockey as a way to relieve stress, have fun and in a lot cases bond with local members of the various countries our military members are in. Unfortunately, the new composite design sticks do not last as long as the old wood sticks used to, which at times has made it difficult for games to take place.

"The end goal is to try and get enough sticks that we can supply some bases for up to six months" added Hoddinott. "We hope that this program can be adopted by other members of the CHL."

The first Sticks for Soldiers collection is this Saturday against the Guelph Storm. Sticks will be collected at all entrances to the Harry Lumley Bayshore Community Centre If you are not able to attend and want to donate just stop by the MacVicar and McComb Remax Attack Box Office this week from 8:30am to 5pm.
