December 6, 2019 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Owen Sound Attack News Release

Coming off back to back overtime wins over Saginaw and Niagara, the Attack looked to continue their winning ways on Friday night as they travelled to London to face the Midwest division leading Knights. Coach Al Letang turned to Mack Guzda in the pipes for the Attack, while Brett Brochu got the nod for the Knights. This game was viewed all across the country as it was broacast by Sportsnet.

After a high paced first period with lots of chances both ways, Guzda and Brochu kept the game scoreless until Matvey Guskov took a 4 minute penalty for high sticking when his stick caught Carter Robertson up high. On the ensuing powerplay, Kaleb Pearson took a pass from Andrew Perrott and came streaking down the wing and ripped a shot past Brochu for his 8th of the campaign. After the double minor expired, Igor Chibrikov took a hooking penalty sending Owen Sound to the penalty kill. No damage came as a result of Chibrikov's minor and the period ended with the Attack holding on to the 1-0 lead.

As the second period began, Carter Robertson picked up 2 minutes for interference, and on that penalty kill, the Knights took advantage of the man advantage and tied the game at 1 with a goal from Alec Regula. With Friday night being the Knight's Teddy Bear Toss night, the stuffed animals came raining down from the stands and there was a lengthy delay while the teddy bears were collected. After the ice was cleared play resumed. London grabbed the lead with just under 14 minutes left, when Ben Roger scored his first OHL goal. After that, the Attack really put on the pressure. Brady Lyle put one past Brochu with a shot from the high slot with assists from Sergey Popov and Barret Kirwin to tie the game once again. Shortly after the Lyle goal, Liam Foudy took a cross checking minor to give the Attack the man advantage. On the powerplay, Deni Goure found Matthew Struthers rebound in front of the Knights crease and knocked it in to take the 3-2 lead. Carter Robertson was also credited with an assist on the Goure goal. As the puck went in the net, Gerard Keane received a 2 minute slashing penalty to keep the Attack on the power play. The Attack took the 2 goal lead when Brady Lyle found himself alone in the faceoff circle and made no mistake putting it past Brochu to grab a 2 goal lead. Only 1:30 after Lyle's second of the night, Josh Samanski won the faceoff and Griffin Wilson sent it back to Igor Chibrikov, who then ripped one past Brochu for his 3rd of the year and gave the Attack a 5-2 lead. Brochu was replaced by Dylan Myskiw with 5 minutes left in the frame. With 3 minutes remaining the Attack were called for too many men on the ice, but once again killed the penalty. Owen Sound took the 5-2 lead into the second intermission.

The third period got underway with the Attack continuing the way they finished off the second period, Matthew Struthers took a cross ice pass from Adam McMaster, and buried it past Myskiw to extend the lead to 4. Later in the frame, Daylon Groulx sent the Attack to the penalty kill when he took a slashing penalty with 10 minutes left in the game, but the Bears were able to kill it off without any trouble. The knights did get one back though when Nathan Dunkley put one past Guzda to make it 6-3 with about 7 and a half left to play. Dunkley took a high sticking penalty shortly after the goal to give the Attack a power play, but they could not capitalize on the man advantage.

The game would end with a final score of 6-3 Attack. During the game the Attack would go 3/5 of the power play, and 3/4 on the penalty kill. Guzda made 26 saves in the winning effort.

The Hatten Home Building Centre Hardest Working Player of the Game was Matthew Struthers. The Owen Sound Bug Juice North Stars Three Stars were Igor Chibrikov (1G,1A), (1G,2A), and Brady Lyle (2G).

The Attack are back in action Saturday night, 7:30 at the Bayshore when the Kitchener Rangers come to town. Tickets are available online and at the MacVicar & McComb Remax Attack Box Office.
