Araiza's 10th Inning Single Gives Keys Walk-Off Win
FREDERICK, MD-Armando Araiza hit an RBI single in the bottom of the 10th inning to give the Frederick Keys (53-60/ 22-22) an 8-7 victory over the Winston-Salem Dash (46-69/22-23) on Wednesday night at Nymeo Field. It was the Keys fifth walk-off of the year, and the third in extra innings.
After Frederick tied the game at seven in the ninth inning, Shane Hoelscher reached on an error to lead off the 10th inning. The Keys used Ricardo Andujar as a pinch runner, and he advanced to second on a Jomar Reyes sacrifice bunt. Andujar moved to third on a groundout, and that brought up Araiza. He then laced a single into center field that scored Andujar and gave the Keys an 8-7 win.
It was another back and forth game, as the Keys scored in the first on a Randolph Gassaway RBI single. The Dash responded in the top of the second with an RBI double off the bat of Brady Conlan, making it a 1-1 game.
The tie would be broken in the bottom of the frame, when Araiza launched a two-run home run to left. Winston-Salem would tie the game again in the third thanks to an Eloy Jimenez RBI single and a Sevy Zavala RBI double.
The score remained 3-3 until the sixth, when the Dash took their first lead of the ballgame. Jimenez and Zavala hit back-to-back doubles, and Jameson Fisher brought in a run with a single, making it 5-3.
Frederick grabbed the lead back in the seventh. Brallan Perez singled to lead off the frame, and Jay Gonzalez reached on an error. That brought up Ademar Rifaela, who lined a double into the left field corner, scoring both runners and tying up the game. After a Gassaway groundout moved Rifaela to third, Yermin Mercedes hit a sacrifice fly to score Rifaela and give the Keys a 6-5 lead.
Winston-Salem would score twice in the eighth to take a 7-6 lead thanks to an error by Reyes and an RBI single from Joel Booker. The Keys would respond in the ninth, however, when Brandon Dulin made an error that allowed Perez to score, tying the game at seven.
In the game, there were seven combined errors, including a season-high five by the Dash. All of the errors were on different players. In the first two games of the series, there have been a combined 10 errors with the Keys committing four and the Dash six.
Luis Gonzalez (5-2) earned the win for the Keys while Matt Foster (0-1) was tagged with the loss, blowing his first save of the season. Gonzalez threw 2.1 innings of scoreless baseball, striking out three. Foster pitched 1.2 innings, and allowed two unearned runs on two hits.
