Amarillo Bulls Edge Odessa 2-1 in a Shootout
AMARILLO, TX - The Amarillo Bulls concluded a weekend series against their rival the Odessa Jackalopes the same way they started it, with a dramatic victory.
Trey Bagwell scored in the final round of regulation shooters to lift the Bulls past the Odessa Jackalopes 2-1 in front of a crowd of nearly 3,500 at the Budweiser Bull Pen in the Amarillo Civic Center on Star Wars and 24 Hours In The Canyon Night.
Two nights earlier, the Bulls got a goal in the final 75 seconds of regulation to secure a win over Odessa.
Egor Kurbatov tallied for the Bulls in regulation, while goaltender Jason Grande was outstanding in goal making some incredible stops including a couple of game savers. Ricky Carballo netted the lone goal for the Jackalopes.
With the victory, the Bulls remained seven points back of the fourth and final playoff spot in the South Division after the Corpus Christi IceRays beat Shreveport 1-0.
It was an exciting and fast first period between the two I-27 rivals. The Jackalopes had some early opportunities but were unable to cash in behind Jason Grande. The Bulls collected the lone goal at the 17:22 mark as newcomer Egor Kurbatov fired a puck past the far post to make it 1-0. It was Kurbatov's first NAHL goal and he had help on the play from Quinn Warmuth and Trey Bagwell. Odessa outshot Amarillo 14-10 in the first period.
The quick play by both teams continued in the middle stanza with the Jackalopes seizing some of the momentum early. Rick Carballo tied the game just past the 8-minute mark when he tipped home a pass from Peyton Frantti. The Bulls had two goals called back in the period with the first one against Egor Kurbatov, who appeared to have caught the puck in the air and then batted it into the net with his stick. However, the referees stated that he had gloved the puck in the net and voided the goal. A short time later, a shot was wired from the high slot area that appeared to have caught the inside of the post but again was waived off by the officials. Odessa outshot Amarillo 16-12 in the period.
The Bulls came out with a determined effort in the final 20 minutes and at times carried the play but were unable to get the go ahead goal. At the other end of the rink, goaltender Jason Grande made a couple of diving stops in the goal crease to keep the game even. Amarillo outshot the visitors 10-9.
There was lots of frantic play in overtime and stretches without a whistle. In the shootout, the first five players combined failed to score and that put the game on the stick of Trey Bagwell who pushed the puck through the legs of Alex Camarre to win the game.
The Odessa Jackalopes outshot the Amarillo Bulls 40-32. Special teams didn't have much work in the contest as there were just a total of three power plays.
