Suns Swept in Double Header on Wednesday

Hagerstown, MD - Brandon Boggetto had another stellar night at the plate for the Hagerstown Suns, going 3-for-3 in game two of Wednesday's double header against the Lakewood BlueClaws. The Suns lost both games, falling 5-0 in game one and 3-2 in game two and are 6-14 overall. The two teams will wrap-up the four-game series on Thursday at Hagerstown Municipal Stadium with a 6:05 PM first pitch.

Lakewood got out to an early lead in the first game against Jackson Tetreault. Daniel Brito led off with a double and went to third on a sacrifice bunt by Dalton Guthrie. Nick Maton hit a towering sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Brito to make it a 1-0 Lakewood advantage.

The BlueClaws extended their lead against Tetreault in the second inning. With one out, Gregori Rivero walked and went to second when Kevin Markham singled to center, but a throwing error by Suns center fielder Armond Upshaw allowed Rivero to go to third and Markham to move to second. With two outs, Josh Stephen singled, driving in both runners to make it a 3-0 Lakewood lead.

Lakewood tacked on a pair of runs in the fourth against Tetreault. Colby Fitch led off with a walk and Rivero doubled to right, moving Fitch to third. Markham singled, plating both runners to extend the BlueClaws lead. Markham was thrown out at second trying to advance on the play for the first out, and a pair of ground balls that followed ended the inning for Tetreault with the Suns trailing 5-0.

Tetreault (0-2) took his second loss of the season, allowing five runs (four earned) on six hits with two walks and three strikeouts over six innings of work. Jared Brasher threw a scoreless, hitless seventh in relief.

In game two, Lakewood powered their way to a lead against Suns starter Tomas Alastre in the third. Kevin Markham led off the inning with a solo home run to put Lakewood ahead 1-0. The homer exited Municipal Stadium in right-center field and was Markham's first of the season.

Lakewood extended their lead against Alastre in the fourth. Jake Scheiner led off with a single to left but was thrown out at second trying to stretch the hit to a double. Colby Fitch smashed his first homer of the season in the next at-bat, giving the BlueClaws a 2-0 lead.

Hagerstown answered in the fifth against BlueClaws starter Will Stewart. After being held scoreless for 11-straight innings, Boggetto homered to right field with one out to cut the deficit to 2-1. The homer was Boggetto's first of the season and was part of a 3-for-3 day at the plate.

The Suns pulled even in the sixth, touching Stewart up for another round-tripper. Cole Freeman led off the inning with a homer to center field that landed in the BlueClaws bullpen and tied the game, 2-2. The home run was Freeman's second of the year and the third game-tying homer for a Suns player this season.

The game went to extra-innings after neither team could scratch across a run in the seventh. In the top of the eighth Yahir Gurrola was placed on second base to begin the inning and Josh Stephen moved him to third after a come-backer glanced off of Suns reliever Sam Held, with Freeman playing the ball off the carom to get the out at first. Brito singled to left, scoring Gurrola and giving a 3-2 lead to the BlueClaws.

In the bottom of the eighth, the Suns came 90-feet away from plating the tying run. Upshaw started the frame on second for Hagerstown, going to third on a sacrifice bunt by Freeman. The next two hitters struck out against BlueClaws reliever Kyle Dohy to end the game with Lakewood winning 3-2.

Alastre threw 6.0 innings in a no-decision, allowing two runs on six hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Held (1-1) took his first loss of the season, allowing one run on one hit with two strikeouts over 2.0 innings of relief.

Notes: Boggetto is 7-for-7 this week, with a homer run, a triple, three RBIs, and three runs... He's also extended his hit streak to three games... He has three multi-hit games this season... Alastre's pickoff in game two is the third of the season for the Suns pitching staff... Freeman and Garcia had a hit in each game on Wednesday... Game one was the first time Hagerstown was shut out this season... It's the first time since Hickory beat the Suns 3-0 on August 17, 2017... Alastre has allowed a homer in each of his four starts... The Suns are 0-2 in extra-inning contests this season... The team has been swept in both double headers they've played... The Suns wrap-up their four-game series with the BlueClaws on Thursday with a 6:05 PM first pitch at Hagerstown Municipal Stadium... Hagerstown will send LHP Jackson Stoeckinger (0-1, 10.50 ERA) to the mound against Lakewood RHP Spencer Howard (1-1, 2.77 ERA)...
