Impact Acquires Uruguayan International Midfielder Alejandro Silva

MONTREAL - The Montreal Impact announced on Monday the acquisition of attacking midfielder and Uruguayan international Alejandro Silva, following a permanent transfer from Argentine club CA Lanús. Silva signed a three-year contract with the club using Targeted Allocation Money. He will join the club upon receiving his international transfer certificate and passing his medical.

"Alejandro is an attacking player who will bring his experience to the team and increase our options in the last third," said Impact head coach Rémi Garde. "His passing qualities and his speed will contribute in improving our play. His high work rate also makes him an option as a midfielder."

"Alejandro is a right-sided attacking player with a lot of experience playing in South America," said technical director Adam Braz. "He will add a different dimension to the attack and will help improve the overall quality and depth of the team. His versatility on the field is very positive in that he can also play as a central midfielder. We are in discussions with other clubs regarding specific players that Rémi has identified and we are hopeful that we can conclude certain moves in the not so distant future."

Silva, 28, has taken part four times in the Copa Libertadores tournament throughout his career, helping Paraguayan club Olimpia in 2013 and Argentine club CA Lanús in 2017 reach the final of the South American continental competition. He recorded five goals and 11 assists in 37 career games and 2,309 minutes in the competition, tying for fourth in 2017 for most assists with four. He also totalled two goals and two assists in 19 Copa Sudamericana games and appeared in one Recopa Sudamericana game.

He spent most of the last five years with Argentine first division side Club Atlético Lanús, recording 10 goals and eight assists in 58 games, including 48 starts, and 4,116 minutes. He won the 2016 Superliga, 2016 Copa Bicentenario and the 2016-17 Supercopa Argentina while scoring one goal in five Copa Argentina games.

Silva started his career with hometown club Centro Atlético Fénix, in Montevideo, playing three seasons in the Uruguayan first division from 2009-10 to 2011-12. He then played two seasons with Olimpia, in the Paraguayan first division, scoring nine goals in 45 games, including 38 starts, in 2012 and 2013, before leaving for Argentina.

He also played a season on loan with Uruguayan club Peñarol, in 2014-15, and returned on loan with Olimpia for the 2015-16 season.

On the international scene, he has played four games with the Uruguay national team, making his senior debut on March 27, 2013, against Chile in a 2014 World Cup qualifying game. More recently, has played two friendly games against Ireland and Italy, in June 2017. He previously represented Uruguay with the U23 national team.

Transaction: The Montreal Impact acquired midfielder Alejandro Silva, following a permanent transfer from Argentine club CA Lanús. Silva signed a three-year contract with the club (until December 2020), using Targeted Allocation Money.
