Zebulon, NC --- Another Carolina Mudcat is heading to the major leagues.

Carolina's 2004 manager Ron Hassey has been named the bench coach for the American League's Seattle Mariners.

The move, announced Wednesday afternoon, returns Hassey to the major leagues where he has served as a coach for the St. Louis Cardinals and Colorado Rockies.

Seattle, which fired manager Bob Melvin at the end of the season, hired Hassey's former Cleveland Indian teammate Mike Hargrove as manager last week. Rene Lachemann, Seattle's bench coach this past season, accepted the same position with the Oakland Athletics to create the opening for Hassey. The only returning staff member for the Mariners is pitching coach Bryan Price, who will have the final season of his two-year contract honored for 2005. All other Mariners coaches have been given permission to speak with other teams.

Hassey guided the Mudcats to a 73-66 record, including over-500 halves in 2004 in what was Hassey's first season of any kind as a minor league manager.

Last month, Hassey had accepted the Florida Marlins' offer to manage Triple-A Albuquerque next season, replacing former Mudcats manager Tracy Woodson, who was not retained at the end of the season. The Mudcats managerial position has not been filled.
