43 USBL Alumni in NBA Camps

Published on October 2, 2003 under United States Basketball League (USBL) News Release

MILFORD, CT – The United States Basketball League, Inc. (USBL) continues to show why it is known throughout the world as "The League of Opportunity" with 43 alumni being invited to participate in NBA Training Camps. Avery Johnson leads the pack, entering his 16th NBA season as a member of the Golden State Warriors who are coached by back to back USBL Champion Eric Musselman.

Nine players from the 2003 season have been extended invitations to NBA camps. The Pennsylvania ValleyDawgs have two players coming off outstanding seasons that are looking to make an impression. Olden Polynice is looking to return to the NBA with the LA Clippers. Coming off an outstanding season where he was named to the 1st Team All USBL Team, Kareem Reid hopes that his credentials impress the Hornets and he is rewarded with a roster spot with the team. Other notable alumni include 2002 USBL Rookie of the Year Devin Brown who is in the World Champion San Antonio Spurs camp, 1999 USBL MVP Adrian Griffin with the Houston Rockets, and 1997 Rookie of the Year Mikki Moore who is with the Seattle Supersonics.

Players are not the only alumni to move to the NBA. Lionel Hollins, Head Coach of the St. Louis Skyhawks in 2002, is an assistant coach with the Memphis Grizzlies and Sam Mitchell is an assistant coach with the Milwaukee Bucks. Charlie Weingroff, the only trainer in Adirondack Wildcat history, makes a move to Boston where he will be an assistant trainer for the Celtics.

"This number of alumni show that the USBL is one of the main sources of player development for the NBA. Players can work on their games and improve all the while knowing that NBA scouts are taking notice and extending invitations. We wish everyone the best as the look to make the jump to the NBA," stated USBL Founder and Commissioner Daniel T. Meisenheimer III.
