2022 Indiana Fever Free Agency Preview
INDIANAPOLIS - The 2022 WNBA Free Agency negotiation period will begin on Saturday, Jan. 15. The Indiana Fever and all WNBA teams will be able to formally negotiate with free agents beginning at 12:01 a.m. ET on Saturday. Beginning Tuesday, Feb. 1, teams will be able to officially announce signings, trades and other transactions.
Qualifying and core offers to players also were able to be offered beginning Jan. 1. The Fever announced the re-signing of Chelsey Perry on Jan. 6 to a qualifying offer.
The following designations outline 16 Indiana Fever player classifications heading into this free agency period.
Unrestricted Free Agents - Players with five or more years of service will become Unrestricted Free Agents. An Unrestricted Free Agent is free to sign with any team, provided that they are not designated as a Core Player by their prior team. Any players with fewer than five years of service who do not receive qualifying offers will also become UFAs. The following players can negotiate a contract with any of the 12 WNBA teams and sign any time beginning Feb. 1, 2022:
Restricted Free Agents - Players with four years of service can receive qualifying offers to become Restricted Free Agents. Restricted free agency gives the player's prior team the right to sign the player by matching a contract offer from another team (Right of First Refusal). If the player signs an offer sheet with another team, the player's prior team has four days from the date it receives the offer sheet to determine whether it wishes to match. If the offer is matched, the player will remain with their prior team. If the offer is not matched within the four-day period, the player will be under contract with the offering team.
Suspended/Contract Expired - Teams maintain exclusive negotiating rights with players who did not play the previous WNBA season.
Reserved Players - Players with three or fewer years of service are considered to be Reserved Players. The player's prior team has exclusive negotiating rights.
Core Players - The Core designation gives a team exclusive negotiating rights with a player. Starting in 2022, a player is not eligible to be given a Core designation if they have played pursuant to a Core player contract for two or more seasons. Each team can designate one of its Veteran Free Agents as a Core Player, provided they do not already have a player on a Core contract for the 2022 season.
Players Under Contract - The following players are not free agents and are under contract for the 2022 season with the Fever:
