2020 Waterloo Black Hawks Futures Camps

February 13, 2020 - United States Hockey League (USHL) - Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Waterloo, Iowa - Fewer than 600 players are likely to appear in a United States Hockey League game this season. It's a group so exclusive that there are many great hockey players who will never have the opportunity. Aspiring USHL stars of the future can get a taste of the league for a few days during the 2020 Waterloo Black Hawks' Futures Camps this summer at Young Arena.

Players born in 2005, 2006, and 2007 have the chance to be inspired and educated during these competitive events, which will include coaching and instruction by Black Hawks staff. In addition to skating in seven one-hour games, each camper will participate in an off-ice training session, based on USHL workouts and supervised by Hawks Strength Coach Spenser Popinga. Players will have the chance to ask questions about junior hockey during locker room tours and a seminar conducted by Waterloo's coaching staff, while parents in attendance will be able to talk to coaches directly during a separate reception at the Courtyard by Marriott in downtown Waterloo.

In addition to real-time coaching during the one-hour games, participants will receive direct feedback and one-on-one evaluation after camp concludes. For 2005-year players, Futures Camp is also an opportunity to make an early impression ahead of the 2021 USHL Phase I Draft.

A separate four-day goalie camp will include six on-ice sessions with a maximum four-to-one goalie-to-coach ratio. Current Waterloo players will assist as shooters during drills, while current and former Black Hawks goaltenders will provide their insights about the position.

Each registered participant will receive a jersey for use during the camp and to keep as a memento from the experience. Sticks, tape, and skate sharpening services will be available for purchase. Catered lunches and dinners are included for players at no cost. Provisions for breakfast and lodging should be made separately. While rooms remain available, families are encouraged to make reservations at The Courtyard by Marriot, the Black Hawks' official host hotel, just three blocks from Young Arena.

Dates for the Hawks' 2020 Futures Camps are:

July 31 - August 2: Players born in 2006 and 2007 (all positions), $485

August 2 - August 5: Goalies born in 2005, 2006, 2007, $550

August 6 - August 9: Players born in 2005 (all positions), $485

Online registration is currently underway via waterlooblackhawks.com on a first-come, first-served basis. The registration deadline is May 31st or until the camps are filled to capacity. A detailed session schedule will be available to participants at a later date.

Note: If unforeseen circumstances force a participant to cancel their registration prior to May 31st, a partial refund of no more than 50% of the registration fee will be provided, or a credit to a 2021 Futures Camp will be offered if applicable. After that date, no refunds will be credited due to commitments the Black Hawks must make in order to execute the camp at the highest standard.
