$16.50 Campaign Starts with the Basics

Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Waterloo, Iowa - Just two blocks from Young Arena, as many as 600 children each year are put on track for higher educational achievement, better careers, and an array of accomplishments that wouldn't be possible without the ability to read.

During the month of October, the Waterloo Black Hawks, Slumberland Furniture, and 1650 The Fan ask you to give a small donation that can make a lifetime of difference through Hawkeye Community College's Family Literacy Program. Thursday, the Hawks announced the Family Literacy Program is this month's featured cause as part of this season's $16.50 Campaign.

Operated from the Van G. Miller Adult Learning Center on Jefferson Street in downtown Waterloo, the Family Literacy Program helps adults develop language-learning and parenting strategies to use in their households. Simultaneously, participants improve their English comprehension, acquire work skills, or make progress toward a High School Equivalency Diploma. Hawkeye's Family Literacy program also serves as a conduit to other essential community services, and provides kids with some of the first books they might ever read.

"Reading is foundational to so much of the other learning that happens in school and in life, so drawing attention to Hawkeye's Family Literacy program seemed like an ideal way to open this season's $16.50 Campaign," said Black Hawks President of Business Operations Joe Greene. "I would also like to thank Slumberland Furniture in Cedar Falls and 1650 The Fan for their support as the $16.50 Campaign begins its third season. Our goals are big, but we can get there if everyone chips in just a little."

Each month, the objective is for 100 Black Hawks fans and KCNZ listeners to contribute $16.50 to the designated organization or cause. When those small amounts are pooled together, they can make a big difference for the Cedar Valley.
