Reason 165 why the ABA can't hold a candle...

to a "professional" league.

The NBADL is adding a new franchise in Portland, Maine.

Rather than a puff piece written on a laptop in Indiana that purports to introduce the ownership (including the requisite "we found great people" "it fits beautifully in our division plans" and "the local fans deserve affordable, family-friendly basketball" blah blah), which invariable ends with something like "details on venue, website, nickname, et al to follow" - which means they don't have ANY of these things in place -

we get:
  • an official league release
  • a scheduled press conference with local coverage to announce the team
  • a team that has ALREADY SECURED A VENUE
  • input and attendance by local officials, verifying that they actually know about the team
  • a phone number to order tickets
  • a (temporary) website up at the time the team is announced, with news, actual contact info, team data and more

So we get this from Maine:

Hard to believe sometimes that the man behind the ABA mess actually made his career in promotions and public relations - the very qualities that this league so sorely lacks...

And they have real investors, with real money, and a real business plan.

They'll probably play a full schedule and keep stats and pay the players and update the website and all have the same uniforms and travel to away games and not charge an ususpecting lady 25K for season tix and have standings and.................

probably about the only advantage a fan of the ABA will have over a fan of the NBADL is the opportunity to possibly maybe winning a house boat vacation.

They actually have a picture of the D-League president with the team owner.

How novel!

When was the last time you saw the ABA put up a picture of the league president, or CEO standing side by side with the owner of the team?? Oh, yea, I remeber....Never.

Honored to have been the 13th player for the Vermont Frost Heaves game on 2-16-07 against the Maryland Nighthawks.

The ABA is the basketball equivalent of Amp'd Mobile.

Ya, it was a houseboat vacation cruising around the some lake in the Ozarks. However in typical Joe-fashion he also put the winners name, phone number, address and hometown on the ABA page for some reason.

One of the posters here pointed it out and then Joe reverted from disclosing everything about the winner to the old ABAesque 'Ask the CEO' format of something like "Mike in LA" or "Q in the click" or "Bill in Phoenix".
