Ball hockey group providing free memberships

Ball Hockey Ontario will be giving 240 youngsters the chance to play ball hockey this spring for free at the Brampton Ball Hockey Club at the Powerade Centre.
The organization said it would like young people to take advantage of the enthusiasm generated for hockey after the recent success of the gold-medal winning Canadian hockey teams. With the warm weather this month in Ontario there are many who have taken the sport outside to their driveway or the street.

“We have seen Crosby’s goal re-created a thousand times already in rinks and on driveways,’’ said Ball Hockey Ontario president Brian Broley. “Kids possess the amazing ability to dream this magical moment and have the perfect ability to take us with them whenever they score that Golden Goal.’’
Beginning immediately and continuing until March 28, prospective families are encouraged to contact club manager Dave Alexander at [email protected] or contact the club at 905-455-6246.

Spots are available for boys and girls in five divisions, 6 to 8; 9, 10; 11, 12; 13, 14; and 15 to 17, with 48 players per division.

There is no skill requirement and all youth members will require CSA approved helmet and facemask, hockey gloves, stick and shin pads (soccer-style is acceptable). The season is three months long and includes 12 regular season games and a minimum of three playoff games. The season begins on March 29.
Ball Hockey Ontario is contributing more than $25,000 to help the kids enjoy hockey and is looking for five community sponsors to cover the cost of referees, timekeepers, jerseys and year-end prizes and trophies. Individual teams (12 players) can be sponsored fully for $500 per team or a full division (four teams of 48 players) can be sponsored for $1,750. Interested sponsors can contact the Brampton Ball Hockey Club for more information.

Ball Hockey Ontario owns and operates eight rinks in Brampton, Barrie, Hamilton and Niagara with members ranging in age from three to more than 60. Membership annually exceeds 25,000 registrants.
