Kudos to Islanders, Shock in Torreon

This is the first year of the CONCACAF Champions League, replacing a former 8-team competition with a UEFA CL-style arrangement with 24 teams among the best in North and Central America... and the Carribean.

MLS teams mostly crashed out early, Houston Dynamo surviving to the final 8 stage, but bowing out to Atlante Tuesday night.

Oddly, two USL teams made the tournament- Montreal defeated Toronto FC and Vancouver to earn a position as Canadian champion, then won their CL group, while Puerto Rico qualified out of the Carribean zone and slid into the final 8.

Puerto Rico finished off Marathon CD of Honduras with a 3-1 aggregate over two games last week and Wednesday. They are in the final four.

Montreal beat Santos Laguna 2-0 before 55,000 at Montreal's Olympic Stadium, then added 2 goals before halftime for a 4-1 aggregate lead over Santos in Torreon, then...

...one of the most brutal finishes I've ever seen.

Good luck to Puerto Rico, who have Mexico's Cruz Azul in one semifinal, and to Montreal... ouch.

1-0 win over Marathon. Nicholas Addlery, formerly of DC United, with the 901' goal to put it away for the Islanders
