Albuquerque is going away...

Post by skippy » Sat Apr 11, 2009 5:59 pm

Last night on the news, T-birds owner said he would "like to see the team back, but we need "angel" investors". He went on to say that this costs a lot of money, the NBA gives them alot, it's just not enough to keep it going by himself."

The local anchor told people to come out and see what just might be the last Albuquerque Thunderbirds game ever.

I was afraid somebody was gonna fold...but that's the way the economy's turning, I guess...

This is how I see the D-League alignment for 2009-10:

NORTHEAST DIVISION
Erie BayHawks
Fort Wayne Mad Ants
Maine Red Claws
Springfield
CENTRAL DIVISION
Dakota Wizards
Iowa Energy
Sioux Falls Skyforce
Tulsa 66ers
MIDWEST DIVISION
Austin Toros
Colorado 14ers
Rio Grande Valley Vipers
Utah Flash
WEST DIVISION
Bakersfield Jam
Idaho Stampede
Los Angeles D-Fenders
Reno Bighorns

Why don't the Suns just buy them? I understand that the Suns have the cheapest owner in the NBA but still.... they have used the D-League pretty regularly in the past....

You actually think the team with the best record in the league (and a good proximity to one of the NBA's better teams) is gonna fold???

I heard that Colorado was going to fold too. Not quite sure how true it is...but also heard that rumor.

Colorado is going to close shop...no $$$$. They even inquired about going to the PBL, because the PBL pays for travel, refs and uniforms.

Yeah, that's a guarantee of success.

I don't think it's the economy. D-League teams have been folding like pressed shirts since day one. The interest isn't there for fall/winter minor league hoops. I'm not so sure interest is there for spring/summer hoops either, but those leagues can be run on the cheap.

Anyone else heard anything?

Particularly troubling to me was the use of the term "angel" investor.
