Who were those Avengers?

Post by ABARedWhiteBlue » Wed Nov 19, 2008 5:53 am

So, we have a game recap from nj.com that the Express lost to the "Virginia" Avengers:
http://www.nj.com/morristown/jasonlockh ... aking.html

A game - the season opener - that was originally announced as involving the Westchester Phantoms:
http://www.nj.com/morristown/index.ssf/ ... er_is.html

However, according to at least one listing on the Express site, was to include the heretofore MIA Internationalz:
http://www.jerseyexpress.net/events.html
November 15, 2008
Event: OPENING NIGHT!
Jersey Express vs. NYC Internationalz
Host: Drew Univeristy
Location: 36 Madison Avenue, Madison, NJ
Time: 7:00 PM
Another part of the same website shows the final score with the Avengers:
http://www.jerseyexpress.net/schedule.html

but there are no listed stats.

There is also NO mention of the name of any player on the Avengers in the game story. And, despite TWO websites for the Avengers:
http://www.avengers.callgood.net/
http://www.avengersbasketball.00sports.com/index.html
there is no mention of this team playing in a game, and beating an ABA team.

So, who DID Jersey play last week?

Alexandria avengers

Post by Bizness Man » Thu Nov 20, 2008 12:52 am

Ok I have info on the Avengers game vs Jersey. The game from what I hear was very exciting on both ends. The Avengers played in the EBA & NPBL last season and doing very well I hear from sources of the Avengers Organization. The final score of the game was 89-88 Avengers. I here the Avengers are looking to get started with there season at the early part of 2009.. I think this is a team to contact or possibly check out if you have time, usbasket.com have alot of articles on this team....MUST BE DOING SOMETHING RIGHT ON THE SEMI PRO SIDE...KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK AVENGERS.... :p

We'll just want to make the record clear that, the Avegers are a pretty good team and just because teams are in different leagues don't allways make you better...I believe the players have to play the game and the coaches have to coach..saying that it's fair play all around the board...I would love to see the Rainmen vs. Avengers....sounds like you want that game too..Good Luck

I never questioned the skill level of the Avengers...

But as of now, the record is not clear.
No reports on either Avenger site about the game.
No stats posted with any players who played in the game.

The ABA has a long history of last-minte teams appearing to play a game. This team actually has an established name; but there has been no information to verify that the players who appeared on the court last week were in any way related to the Alexandria Avengers listed on the team's web sites. It is highly unlikely that someone in Jersey called Virginia sometime on game day, and that the person in VA was able to pull together the team at a moment's notice - and during their off-season, based upon the Avenger sites - and drive four hours to Madison, NJ to play that day.

There had to be some pre-planning involved, and it seems very odd that there is no mention of it on the Avenger sites.

Or, there is no relation between the Avengers based in Alexandria, and those that played in Jersey, other than the name.

Were you there?

I agree with most of your post, however ...

Quoted from the report on USBasket.com:

http://www.usbasket.com/EBA/basketball. ... sID=146248

Led by their veterans, among them Daryl Owens (6'2''-G-76, college: Nova CC) and Tyree Harris (6'1''-G-79, college: Pfeiffer), the Avengers ... The top scorers for the Avengers were Kareem Collins (6'3''-G/F-80, college: New Jersey City St.) with 21pts and Harris, with 15.

Harris and Owens were with Alexandria last season in the EBA, and possibly, the NPBL. Collins previously played with Harlem and the Frenzy in 04-05 and last year with the NJ Starting Five in the EBA.

I've sent an email off to the Express but haven't heard anything yet.
