Could the AAFL come back as the new USFL?

Post by Aaronhere » Thu Mar 13, 2008 8:53 pm

Help me out here. Who owns the trademark rights to the names and logos of the old USFL teams? Could the AAFL come back as the new USFL (like Uncle Joe thought he could do with the ABA)? The current teams could use their nicknames (I hated TEAM Alabama, etc.)

I doubt it, nor would I see much point in doing so.

This league (NIFL) is like a frickin' cockroach. You could throw a nuclear bomb at it and it would still survive

So I'd rather spend a quarter of an ABA franchise to repair my car, as opposed to spending a franchise and a half to get a new car that might have some planned obsolescence that causes it to break down 5 days after the end of the warranty period.

Or, you know, we could let the USFL be, right where it is, as a fond memory.
Old enough to remember when bashing the ABA was fun.

We could bring back the Donald as an owner and have a league-wide hairpiece day.

I love the Donald idea. The point of my original post was to inquire as to whether some person or entity still holds the trademark rights to the old USFL logos and nicknames.

No one does. I know this because Throwbackmax doesn't use licensed material, in other words the copyright ran out and its up for grabs.

1. The AAFL is beyond repair (whether it comes back as the USFL or the AAFL).

2. The USFL died and it might not be realistic to think you can resurrect that dinosaur. Forward thinking is probably the better idea.

The AAFL concept was fine (although team nicknames would have been a good idea) the only problem was that there was no funding.
