Islanders surrender in stoppage time
Islanders 0:1 Impact

Montreal – Friday June 29th. The Orange Troops suffered their first defeat under ‘General’ Clarke’s command when they surrendered the game’s only goal to Montreal in stoppage time in the final minutes of the match at Claude Robillard Sports Complex.

After 90 minutes of regulation time, of an overall even game between both teams, the game was a technical 0:0 draw until the 3rd minute (of 4 in stoppage time) when the Gatti and Ribeiro duo penetrated a weakened Islanders defence and made it look all too easy to score against St. Josh (Saunders).

On the play, defender Simon Gatti made a pass to Antonio Ribeiro, who took his time to control the ball at the top of the box before taking a low, diagonal shot 18 yards away to beat the Puerto Rican goalkeeper on his right. It was Ribeiro’s first goal of the season, and Gatti’s first assist this year.

Newly acquired defender Lars Lyssand had 3 shots against his former Montreal team, including a hard left-footed strike on the 78th minute from 30-yards away that brushed the outside of the net.

It was the first game for former Islanders’ Alen Marcina against Puerto Rico. The 2006 Islanders’ goal leader had only a Foul to show for his numbers, and was substituted 20 minutes into the 2nd half by Montreal’s Captain Mauro Biello, who missed the last seven games for the Impact after suffering a thigh injury during the home opener against the Seattle Sounders, on May 20.

Josh Saunders faced 6 shots, and made 1 save. Josh now has 50 saves this season, and is in 4th place in saves in the USL-1, chasing the league’s leader Rochester’s Chase Harrison who has 61.

This was Terry Boss’, the Puerto Rican backup goalkeeper, last regular season game with the Islanders. Boss will be on loan to the Charlotte Eagles in the USL-2 for the rest of the Islanders regular season and will return to Puerto Rico for the USL-1 league playoffs. USL-2 Baltimore Crystal Palace’s Michael Behonick will replace Boss as the Puerto Rican backup goalkeeper for the rest of the USL-1 regular season.

In front of a season record crowd of 12,844, Montreal ended a four-game home winless streak and is now in 3rd place of the USL-1 standings, only two points away from the first place Whitecaps.

The loss is Puerto Rico’s 4th in the season, their 2nd on the road. The Orange Troops now have a 3-6-4 record. Puerto Rico is in 9th place with 15 points, 10 points behind Vancouver.

The Islanders are now 2-3-1 under the command of the Irish “General” Colin Clarke, who took the helm of the team on May 26th.

With this loss, the Islanders are now 0-2-1 this season against Canadian teams; after drawing Montreal 1:1 on May 11th and the Vancouver Whitecaps 0:0 on June 24th, both ties at Juan Ramón Loubriel in Bayamón.

The Islanders are still winless all time against the Impact; and now have a 0-3-8 lifetime record against Montreal. The Impact have shutout Puerto Rico 7 times in 11 games and have outscored the Puerto Ricans 15-4.

The Islanders will next play the Charleston Battery 3 times in a row in July, on the 7th, 13th &15th. The game on July 15th will be the Islanders 100th game in the USL-1 since they joined the league in 2004. Puerto Rico has a 5-4-1 record lifetime against Charleston and has outscored the Battery 11-6 in 10 games.

PUERTO RICO 0 IMPACT 1

MONTREAL – A goal from midfielder Antonio Ribeiro in stoppage time of the second half led the Montreal Impact (6-2-5) to a 1-0 shut out against the Puerto Rico Islanders (3-4-6), Friday, in front of 12,844 spectators at the Claude-Robillard Sports Complex.

On the play, defender Simon Gatti, who had replaced David Fronimadis in the 84th minute, made a pass to Ribeiro, who took the time to control the ball at the top of the box before taking a low, diagonal shot. His 18-yard shot beat the Islanders goalkeeper Josh Saunders, on his right.

For Ribeiro, it was his first goal of the season, while Gatti’s assist was his first career point with the Impact.

“I think we need to be patient. We try building gradually and to change some of our habits on the field," said Ribeiro. "I think that stretching and rest are also important: we need to be careful about certain things and it pays off. I like playing physical. I consider a physical approach to be as important as a tactical approach. We are ready as a team to play both ways.”

“This victory feels good, we’ve been waiting for it for some time," said Impact head coach Nick De Santis. "It will build the team’s confidence. However we had a hard time, the Islanders put pressure on us in the second half. During the first twenty minutes, we created opportunities, but we then began losing the midfield. The goal was great because the guys continued to believe. Ribeiro deserved to score, he believes in himself and in his potential, and he showed it at the end of the game. Once again, this victory is really good for team morale.”

With the win, the Impact ends a four-game winless streak at home and is now only two points away from first place in the USL First Division standings, behind the Vancouver Whitecaps (25 points).

Captain Mauro Biello, who missed the last seven games after suffering a thigh injury during the home opener against the Seattle Sounders, on May 20, returned to play tonight at the 65th minute, when he was substituted into the game for Alen Marcina.

With 12,844 spectators, the Impact recorded its best crowd of the season so far at home. It was also the ninth best attendance in the club's history during regular season.

Ribeiro hero for Impact
Impact 1, Isles 0. Scores winner in extra time

Antonio Ribeiro knows a thing or two about patience.

He was patient earlier this season when he wasn't getting a lot of playing time with the Impact.

And he was patient when he joined the Canadian national team for the CONCACAF Gold Cup, but didn't dress for any of the team's five games.

And he was patient last night as he waited for an opportunity to score the game's only goal, which came in extra time as the Impact beat the Puerto Rico Islanders 1-0 in United Soccer Leagues First Division action last night at Claude Robillard Stadium.

"Soccer is a game where you have to wait for your chances," Ribeiro said.

"You have to make every minute count, even when you get some extra ones."

Simon Gatti was making a run up the right side and was thinking about taking a shot when he heard Ribeiro call out.

"I thought I had a chance, but then I saw him alone," said Gatti, who came off the bench in the second half to set up the winner. Ribeiro was to the left of goalkeeper Josh Saunders and said he gambled on the shot.

"I saw there was a defender coming across and I figured my best chance was to go for the far post," said Ribeiro, whose drive along the ground froze Saunders.

Most of the 12,844 spectators were sent scurrying for cover after a torrential rainstorm hit during the second half, but there were enough fans remaining to greet the goal with a loud cheer. Goals have been few and far between for the Impact at home this season and the win snapped a four-game home-losing streak (0-2-2). The Impact had failed to score in its last two home games.

"It was great to get my first goal of the season after not playing a lot in the beginning of the season," Ribeiro said.

While coach Nick De Santis was happy with the victory, he wasn't happy with the second-half letdown.

"I thought we played hard, but we allowed them to control the midfield in the second half and they came up with some good scoring chances," De Santis said. "We can't let teams do that."

The player who gave the Impact the most trouble was defender Lars Lyssand, who was traded from Montreal to Puerto Rico this month. He had a shot that went just wide in the 78th minute and, a few minutes later, he tested Montreal goalkeeper Matt Jordan with a 40-yard free kick that Jordan managed to punch away.

"It was tough in the second half because it was wet, but I had a few good chances," said Lyssand, who sent a third shot over the crossbar. "We knew Montreal has been having trouble at home and we came at them pretty hard."

The victory moved the Impact into third place in the First Division with 23 points, one less than Rochester and two back of defending champion Vancouver. The Impact has three games in hand on Rochester.

The Impact makes its annual pilgrimage to Quebec City tomorrow for a home game against the last-place California Victory (4 p.m., CJAD Radio-800, Radio-Canada).
