It had been 12 years since the then-Long Island Lizards had walked off the field with the Steinfeld Cup and for nearly three quarters on Saturday night, it looked like another wait-until-next-year speech might be on the agenda.
But a funny thing happened in the fourth quarter. The New York team that finished first in the regular season and earned a reputation as one of the top defensive teams in Major League Lacrosse finally decided to show up. And once they did, Rochester didn't stand much of a chance.
Trailing 12-11 early in the fourth quarter, the Lizards scored four unanswered goals and wound up with a 15-12 win. New York (11-4) won its third championship and first since 2003. Rochester (8-7) lost in the championship game for the second straight season.
