How the Super Bowl kicked the Grey Cup to the sideline as Canada’s big football event

The NFL is the football king but the CFL can do things to make things better.

The Canadian Football League has existed in one form or another for more than 130 years, and over that time it has built a brand strength that is the envy of other businesses.

The Grey Cup has been played since 1909 and it remains one of the enduring symbols of this country. The league is the only game in town in Saskatchewan and Hamilton, Ont., and, during the summer months, it has the sports market to itself in Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg and Ottawa.

Its TV deal with TSN is worth $40 million a year and the league’s numbers are solid. It draws an average audience of around 700,000 for a regular-season game — double a regional Canucks broadcast on Sportsnet — and the Grey Cup continues to do boffo box office. The 2015 Dominion final in Winnipeg drew an average audience of 4.3 million on TSN and RDS, the French-language all-sports network, and 9.7 million Canadians watched some part of the game.

Somehow the franchise, like its league, has to connect with the next wave of sports fans. Tradition is a wonderful thing. So is history. At least, it is to fans of a certain age.

I found this part of the article most interesting now remember this is Canada while the league has been popular they have failed to develop the junior levels of their game ,if they figure that out they will reverse the drop off trend, the nfl benefits from the college game it serves as the base without that it would suffer the same losses...

Well, guess Canada is a hockey country. As simple as that.

Though, I heard football is progressing in the French schools. Kinda strange! :-?
