Nuggets to start team in Grand Junction, CO

Post by toad455 » Tue Mar 14, 2017 4:49 pm

Residents of Grand Junction (CO) will be voting this month on a proposed new 5,200-seat arena that officials hope will become home to a D-League team affiliated with the NBA's Denver Nuggets and possibly a minor hockey team in the ECHL.

So much for Omaha, though Portland could potentially take Omaha if the potential owners are still interested.

This will just leave Portland, New Orleans & LA Clippers without a D-League team.

5,200 arena in an isolated location with a metro population of 147,000.

I'll put it this way... Rapid City has 3,000 less people and recently the Rush made @EmptySeatsPics.

Which isn't to say the citizens in Grand Junction won't vote for it. But a convention center has more uses and, when you're already throwing money at it, look out.

Besides... a proper arena for the D-League should be half as big. I tend to believe the NAHL would work in that size building, too. Even then, they're better off expanding their current ice arena and doing something less expensive for D-League at that convention center.

Update: voters trashed the concept.

What? The fine people of Grand Junction don't want to give a bunch of freebees away to multi-millionaires. At least we had a millionaire in our area step up and spend about $12 million of his own money for a 5,000-seat arena.
