Hawks to start a team in 2019-2020
http://dleague.nba.com/news/atlanta-haw ... ague-team/
They are building a new 3500 seat arena in nearby College Park, less than 10 miles from downtown.
Still waiting on a couple other teams to develop in the Southeast. Who is next?

So looks like in the Southeast you will have the Hornets, Hawks, Magic and potentially the Pelicans and Heat eventually. Not sure on the Memphis Grizzlies status, but maybe they could drop Iowa for a closer location.
I would imagine that most of these teams would ideally like to own or at least manage the day to day operations of the D-League franchises.
And then, when the D-League is as far-flung as the NBA with maybe 5% of the income...
...follow the (lack of) money.
It is different when you own you own team or even own arena like the Hawks. They are investing in something that will pay for itself over time. These NBA teams can afford to have the D-League team across the country. It not like they expect to make a ton of profit off the teams.
It is a different model from the MLB model. To me, we will see a change when the guys stop doing the one and done in college and just spend their one season in the D-League instead. It will really take off then. Also, with closer located teams, I would like to see veteran players on rehab assignments more. This should be the case with a team like the Hawks where both the NBA team and the affiliate are in the same major city.

so possibly for 2017-18 we'll have:
Rochester, MN(Timberwolves)
Omaha, NB(Nuggets)
Kissimmee, FL(Magic)
Bakersfield Jam(Clippers)
Oshkosh, WI(Bucks)
2018-19
Washington DC(Wizards)
2019-2020
College Park, GA(Hawks)
TBA
New Orleans Pelicans
Portland Trailblazers
odds are one or two of the five mentioned in 2017-18 will be delayed. Possibly Portland & Atlanta will be the last two to start D-League teams. Erie also gets dumped after this season. I hope someone picks them up(Portland, New Olreans or the Clippers if Bakersfield falls through).

With the addition of Southaven the Southeast is starting to come together:
Southaven, Mississippi - Grizzlies
College Park, GA- Hawks
Lakeland, FL- Magic
Geensboro, NC- Bobcats
Still waiting to see what happens with New Orleans and Miami.
Two thirds of the league now own and operate their own franchises. I'm guessing by the start of the 2020 season almost all teams will have an affiliate and own them as well.

A lot of one-and-dones are winding up in the D League as it is. Compared to the NFL and MLB, there isn't a lot of turnover in NBA rosters outside of free agency. Pretty much everyone not drafted in the first round (and even a handful of first-rounders) wind up in the D League.

basically now only the Clippers & Trailblazers are the only teams without affiliates set-up. The Erie BayHawks & Bakersfield Jam are all available to attach to. Clippers should take Bakersfield & Portland should take Erie.
we have now:
2017-18 season(24 teams unless Erie is picked up)
Iowa Energy(Timberwolves)
Lakeland, FL(Magic)
Southaven, MS(Grizzlies)
Oshkosh, WI(Bucks)
2018-19
Washington DC(Wizards)
2019-2020
College Park, GA(Hawks)
TBA
Omaha, NB(Nuggets)
TBA
New Orleans Pelicans(???)
Los Angeles Clippers(Bakersfield Jam?)
Portland Trailblazers(Erie BayHawks?)
