Orlando Magic seeking local home for D-League team

Post by toad455 » Fri Jan 08, 2016 1:01 am

On January 6, 2016, the Orlando Magic announced that they have begun the process of bringing an NBA D-League team to Central Florida or Northern Florida and sent RFPs to eight possible homes and venues for the team: Daytona Beach (Ocean Center), Estero (Germain Arena), Fort Myers (Lee County Civic Center), Jacksonville (Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena), Kissimmee (Silver Spurs Arena), Lakeland (Lakeland Center), and two venues in Orlando (HP Field House and CFE Arena). The team would begin to play in the 2018–19 season and would be directly owned and operated by the Magic and not be a relocation of their current hybrid affiliation with the Erie BayHawks.

odds are their team gets placed in Jacksonville.

I know Jacksonville is probably the farthest team but if an ABA team can consistently draw a couple thousand in that arena then a D-League team should be able to.

You have to figure the Hawks will be in the mix in 2018.

You figure the Heat would want a closer team aside from Sioux Falls and look maybe at another (South) Florida team.

Same thing with Iowa City and the Memphis Grizzles.

Something still has to be done with New Orleans as well.

I think we'll see the four southern teams added in 2018-19. Jacksonville(Orlando), South Florida(Miami), Gwinnette(Atlanta) & Mobile(New Orleans) as well as Washington's team assuming their practice arena is completed by then. Portland then picks up Idaho, Denver takes in the Omaha team, Minnesota takes Sioux Falls & Milwaukee takes Erie. This would just leave the LA Clippers without a team.

Currently the Clippers have a Dleague team ... they're called the LA Lakers.

An aside... the Jazz bought the Idaho Stampede. Chances are they could move into Utah. Idaho hasn't drawn well for years in a 5,000-seat building. The old Idaho owners wanted a competition team, and the direction the D-League is going doesn't suit them.

As for Orlando... how do smaller Floridian metros have all these 8,000-seat buildings? If you had HP Field House in any of these cities, that would be ideal. Jacksonville's big arena is an invitation to minimize revenue. It's been hard for me to look at NBA Network D-League games in Maine and Santa Cruz and NOT think that anyone else's "bigger is better" thought isn't completely wrong-headed. It has to "right-size" better than this. Generally, go where you'll sell season tickets.

Jacksonville's make formal proposal to become Magic's D-League Affiliate

Interesting the article also mentions Orlando and the Wide World of Sports Complex. There are already few teams playing in the same city as the parent club.

Looks like the have an opportunity for pickup a coach too. Luckily this guy is humble enough to accept an assistant coaching position.
