Report: Kalamazoo Pure basketball team in limbo ahead of ABA playoffs

KALAMAZOO, MI — The Kalamazoo Pure semi-professional basketball team is not so pure, apparently.

At least that is what a report from Thursday night suggests.

In its inaugural season, Kalamazoo Pure, which features numerous former Kalamazoo high school stars, won the North Central Division Championship. The team clinched a spot in the ABA playoffs and it was expected to compete on April 4 in Laredo, Texas.

That does not appear to be possible now.

According to FOX 17, Kalamazoo Pure owner Rico White has left the team in limbo. He and his wife have allegedly gone to Las Vegas for new jobs. The team recently started a GoFundMe page in an attempt to raise $3,000, which would fund the team's transportation, meals and ancillary expenses. A total of $845 had been raised early Friday.

"The fact that we're out here really trying hard trying to get to Texas you know it's just a slap in the face to us," Kalamazoo Pure player Khandel Bell told FOX 17. "We were told all we had to do was win games and everything will follow.

"And we held our bargain."

Phone calls to the Kalamazoo Pure and White have not been returned.

FOX 17 reports White has refuted the allegations, saying "no money was made and no money was stolen." The report also states that White allegedly called the ABA and dissolved the team.

This is apparently just one of many issues surrounding the Kalamazoo Pure team.

And yet the Kalamazoo Pure is listed as a team in the now Michigan-based New Era Basketball Association.

Well, they made it to Laredo and are playing right now--up by 7 over South Florida Gold after one. Apparently $845 was enough to get them there.
