Here's a shocker... just like with the LV Vipers, LV Slam, LV Aces, and the other ABA teams that we've "had" here in Las Vegas, this team has had NO coverage locally.
Sell some tickets, that might change.
Old enough to remember when bashing the ABA was fun.

Salem Sabres Added to ABA PAC/NW Division

Salem-News.com
“Where Basketball is More Than Just a Game”

(INDIANOPOLIS, IN) - The American Basketball Association (ABA) http://www.abalive.com today announced that the Salem Sabres from Salem, Oregon has been added to its Pacific/Northwest Division. “We’ve had excellent growth in the division for next season,” stated Joe Newman, ABA CEO. “And we’re pleased to add our first team in Oregon. The Sabres will begin with an abbreviated schedule in their first season and will compete with the Seattle Mountaineers, Kitsap Admirals, Olympia Rise, Lakewood Panthers and Washington Raptors.”

The Sabres are owned by C. Neiman Sports, Inc., a local non-profit organization. CEO Rhonda Alexander, who previously owned the Willamette Bistro in Salem got the idea of team ownership from another ABA team owner and said, “I am very excited about the upcoming season and want the organization to take things slow. We are now diligently working on building our coaching staff, securing a venue and selecting our players who will be representing Oregon’s Capital City. We recognize we are a new organization so we want to take the time to build solid community relationships. Our goal is to create affordable, fun, exciting family and youth entertainment here in Salem.”

The ABA is symbolized by the red, white and blue ball and was a pioneer basketball league in the United States which ran for about 10 years back in the late 1960s.

There are only two professional basketball leagues in the history of the United States that people recognize. They are the NBA and the ABA. The ABA has a rich history dating back to 1967. The original ABA, competed with the well established National Basketball Association NBA, until the ABA-NBA merger in 1976. The ABA had legendary players such as Julius ("Dr. J") Erving, Connie Hawkins, George ("Ice") Gerving, David Thompson, George McGinnis, Artist Gilmore, Moses Malone, and Rick Berry. Ultimately, four ABA teams were merged into the NBA: the New York Nicks, Denver Nuggets, Indiana Pacers, and San Antonio Spurs.

In the year 2000, the rights to the ABA was acquired back from the NBA by one of its original founders, Atty. Dick Tinkham and named Joe Newman as its CEO. There are currently over 90 ABA professional basketball teams throughout the United States. The ABA re-started with 9 teams and after 12 years, is now the 2nd largest professional basketball league in the United States.

City of Salem councilwoman Sheryl Thomas said, “A professional basketball team would be a great asset to the city and would give our youth and families in the community another positive outlet and hopefully help boost the local economy. I am ready to see the Salem Sabres play.”

The Sabres will be hosting 2-3 tryouts in July and August with the dates and locations to be announced.

Chicago man takes a shot with new pro basketball team in Grand Rapids

GRAND RAPIDS, MI – Pro basketball will take another shot in Grand Rapids.

The American Basketball Association has given verbal approval to reserve the Grand Rapids market for a team that will begin play in the fall, ABA CEO Joe Newman said Monday.

The Grand Rapids team, to be known as the Cyclones, is owned by Kendalle Delaney, a track and field coach at North Lawndale College Prep High School and the Legacy Runners Athletic Club in Chicago. Delaney, who recently was awarded the ABA’s Chicago Fury, has accepted a job and will be moving to Grand Rapids in August. He will transfer ownership to Grand Rapids.
“We want to represent Grand Rapids like it’s never been represented before,” Delaney said.

The Cyclones will be a travel team their first season, playing between five and 15 games in schedules arranged by owners rather than a formal league schedule. Delaney said four or five of them are to be played in Grand Rapids, though no formal site has been decided.

A tryout has been scheduled for noon to 4 p.m. Aug. 8 at Lifequest at 1318 Sigsbee St. Southeast in Grand Rapids.

“We’re still working on some of the details but we really want to represent Grand Rapids well,” said Adam Chrisco, the director of marketing for the team.
Delaney expects the team to play a full 32-game season in 2013-14.
It will be a modest living. The market reservation fee will cost Delaney $10,000, Newman said. As for pay, Delaney said players will split of portion of the home gate, and, on the road, receive no pay but incur no expenses.
“It’s not the NBA, but it gives players an opportunity, a hope, to still have a way to play professionally,” he said.

There are close to 90 teams in the ABA, which has gone through a transformation over the decades from a league that rivaled the NBA in the 1960s. The new version, launched in 1999, no longer has direct affiliation with the NBA, which has the NBA D-League as its minor league.

Instead, the ABA provides opportunities for players to remain competitive, play professionally and provide a chance for advancement.
Newman likes the idea of a team in Grand Rapids.

“I always felt Grand Rapids was a great ABA city, really a perfect place for our league to be in,” Newman said. “When I heard that from (Delaney) I was very pleased.”

The Cyclones would play in the newly-formed North Division that includes teams such as the Detroit Hoops, Indy Drive and Michiana Monarchs.
Professional basketball in Grand Rapids has seen teams come and go over the years. The Grand Rapids Flight, which started in 2004, had previous applied for ABA membership in 2009 after five years with the International Basketball League. That league also once included the Holland Blast, which began in 2005.

Before the Flight, there was the Grand Rapids Hoops, which disbanded in early 2000 after the Continental Basketball Association folded.
This will end well.

How the hell does a track and filed coach qualify to own a sports franchise!!??? The guy can barely qualify to buy a car and house, HOW can he qualify to buy a franchise? This is ANOTHER PERFECT EXAMPLE of someone coming in, in hopes of financing his pathetic adventure through Try-Outs, Sponsors, Try-Outs, Try-outs and more Try-outs.

Every owner I have ever dealt with in minor league baseball and hockey owned other companies with revenues of $5+million or more, had several hundred employees, and made more in a week than the ABA makes in a year COMBINED! A track and field coach as a pro sports owner? You know how ridiculous that sounds? The owner for a baseball team I use to work with had a net worth of $50+ million, and was on the Board of Directors of CBS! Another owned a hedge fund and made upwards of $20 million a year. THAT WAS THEIR QUALIFICATION!!!!! A Track and %$#@* field coach????? Really???? Whats he make a year, $12,500?? How is THAT going to support a %$#@ sports franchise? The guys I mentioned had Amex Black Cards.... this guy probably just qualifies for a bank DEBIT card.

What a joke. This team won't see tip off and in the process players and sponsors will get screwed........again.

I cannot wait for the day we can all sing...

Na Na Na Na
Na Na Na Na
A-B-A Good-Bye

It is time these dreamers quit digging their own finance and reputation grave.

Question - Since this cluster started as ABA 2000 has many championship series' has the league owner attended? I would love to know this answer. Unfortunately, this scam is too small scale to be featured on the show American Greed.

To be honest I think Joe goes to each and every one. He used to also go to an annual meeting but those meetings seem to have stopped. In typical ABA vernacularism there was no announcement, no email, no anything. The meetings just weren't mentioned again.

I also think this circus if a league is an almost brilliant business idea, if you are Joe or Dick Tinkham. All you need is a website, you attract hundreds of dreamers, schemers, idiots and occasional genuine leads. Each wanting to own their dream of an "pro" franchise. In return, the new owners get sent the ABA keys to success and a copy of a schedule which is really another guess. When the money runs out the owner is almost to flat broke to seek retribution.

It's a great business if you own it and can stomach the fact it's not considered very highly by most of the rest of the world.

This ends when Joe Newman retires

Due to numerous threats of legal action from certain people.......all of the above is my opinion only and it should be noted that I have never invested in the ABA. It is simply one mans opinion.

That should read "dies". Why would Newman retire from one of the most lucrative, legal, and effective scams ever invented?
