Sharks Fall to Bossier-Shreveport Battlewings 59-14

Bossier City, LA – The Bossier-Shreveport Battlewings defeated the Corpus Christi Sharks 59-14 on Saturday night at CenturyTel Center in Bossier City, Louisiana. Trailing after one quarter of play, Bossier-Shreveport scored 53 unanswered points to secure the victory. Corpus Christi’s 14 point offensive performance established a new single game low for the franchise. The Battlewings improved their 2009 record to 1-1 while the Sharks fell to 0-2.

The Sharks raced to a 14-6 first quarter lead after scoring on their first two possessions. FB Wallace House’s 1 yard touchdown plunge opened the scoring as Corpus Christi drove 39 yards on 6 plays. Nick Gatto’s PAT gave Corpus Christi a 7-0 lead. After Battlewings QB Andrico Hines closed the gap to 7-6 by connecting with P.J. Berry on a 21 yard score, Sharks QB Gary Cooper finished off an 8 play 42 yard touchdown drive with a one yard run.

P.J. Berry returned the ensuing kickoff 50 yards for a touchdown which ignited the Battlewings scoring run. Following Berry’s return, Bossier-Shreveport took advantage of four Sharks 2nd quarter miscues to take control of the game. Immediately after Corpus Christi botched a FG attempt with a bad snap, Wings RB Jason Schule rushed through the Corpus Christi defense for an 18 yard score. Hines found WR Buchie Ibeh with a 10 yard scoring strike after Bossier-Shreveport recovered a Brandon Hussey fumble. Hines then cashed in on a Cooper fumble, hitting Chavis McCollister with an 8 yard touchdown strike. Roland Cola’s 49 yard interception return of a Cooper pass closed out the 2nd half scoring as Bossier-Shreveport enjoyed a 40-14 half time lead.

Hines tossed three 2nd half TD passes to close out the scoring. Ibeh scored his 2nd and 3rd touchdowns of the evening on passes of 13 and 3 yards. Hines also connected with Berry on a 39 yard score.

Sharks Polish Off Dusters 63-47

Corpus Christi, TX – QB Gary Cooper threw four touchdown passes and ran for three more to lead the Corpus Christi Sharks to a 63-47 victory over the Amarillo Dusters at Radiology Associates Field at American Bank Center. Cooper was recognized as the Russell Athletic Offensive Player of the Game. The Sharks improved their record to 1-2 while Amarillo fell to 0-3.

The Sharks drew first blood when Cooper connected with WR Brandon Hussey for a 20 yard score. Corpus Christi’s defense matched that touchdown on the next possession when Darius Robinson recovered an Amarillo fumble in the Dusters’ end zone. Nick Gatto’s extra point gave the Sharks a 14-0 lead. Robinson, who also recovered a late 4th quarter fumble, led the Sharks defensive charge and was named Aaron’s Defensive Player of the Game.

Amarillo starting QB Collin Drafts found WR Xavier Hair for an 11 yard score to close out first quarter scoring and cut the Sharks lead to 14-7. Hair collected the Drafts pass in front of the Corpus Christi secondary before weaving his way between two Sharks defenders and into the end zone.

The second quarter provided plenty of excitement as both teams combined to score 42 points. Gatto kicked things off for Corpus Christi with an 18 yard field goal which gave the Sharks a 17-7 advantage. QB Matt Bassuener replaced an injured Collin Drafts to lead the Dusters to a score on his first series. Bassuener capped off a seven play 40 yard drive with a one yard run to close the gap to 17-13.

The Dusters took a 20-17 lead when Bassuener found Hair with a 17 yard strike. Corpus Christi answered and regained the lead as Cooper dove over the left side for a 2 yard score. Amarillo jumped ahead 27-24 when Bassuener hit WR Craig Fulton Jr. for a 22 yard score.

Cooper and the Sharks countered when he combined with WR Tim Harris for a 35 yard circus touchdown. Cooper over threw Harris on the play but the ball deflected off an Amarillo defender, then off the wall and into the waiting hands of Harris who waltzed into the end zone. Corpus Christi added a safety and a 33 yard Gatto field goal as they enjoyed a 36-27 half time lead.

The Sharks outscored the Dusters 27-20 in the second half to seal the victory. Cooper scored on rushes of 1 and 2 yards as well as tossing touchdown passes of 17 and 4 yards to WR Jonathan Graham.

Corpus Christi will enjoy a week off before traveling to Rio Grande Valley and Florida for respective games against the Dorados (April 25) and Firecats (May 1). The Sharks return to American Bank Center on May 9 to host the Tennessee Valley Vipers. Kick off is scheduled for 7:05pm. For ticket information call 361-882-9292 or visit http://www.ccsharks.com.

Firecats Burn Sharks 66-48

Estero, FL – Florida QB Chris Wallace threw nine touchdown passes to 4 different receivers as he led the Firecats to a 66-48 victory over the Corpus Christi Sharks. Wallace, who completed 19 of 36 attempts for 363 yards and no interceptions, was also recognized as the Russell Athletic Offensive Player of the Game. The Sharks fell to 1-4 on the young season while the Firecats improved to 3-3.

The Sharks jumped out to a 6-0 lead when QB Gary Cooper found Brandon Hussey in the right corner of the end zone for a 25 yard score. Florida tied Corpus Christi at 6 when FB James Bear used a second effort lunge to score from 1 yard out.

On the following possession Corpus Christi turned the ball over on downs after Cooper was sacked at the Sharks’ 13 yard line. Moments later Wallace teamed up with Chris McKinney on a 14 yard slant, the first of Wallace’s 9 touchdown passes of the evening. The Sharks answered and tied the game at 13 on the first play of the 2nd quarter as Cooper found a wide open Jonathon Graham for a 23 yard score.

James Panui hauled in a 33 yard touchdown strike from Wallace to put the Firecats on top for good at 20-13 with 10:56 to play in the 2nd quarter. The Sharks pulled within 1 when Cooper dove over the right side for a 1 yard touchdown run, his ninth of the season. The Sharks were not able to convert the point after touchdown attempt and trailed 20-19.

Wallace threw touchdown passes of 45 and 42 yards respectively to Bruce Gordon and McKinney to close out first half scoring and give the Firecats a 33-19 lead at the break.

The Firecats out scored the Sharks 33-29 in the second half to preserve the win. Corpus Christi cut Florida’s lead to 11 points with Mike Mouton’s 1 yard run over the right side at the 8:25 mark of the 4th quarter. Wallace responded finding McKinney for a 25 yard score to extend the Firecats’ lead to 59-41.

Down but not out, the Sharks again closed the gap to 11 when Nathan Fricke took a pitch from Cooper and swept wide for a 2 yard score with 50.2 seconds remaining to play. Florida’s Brent Burnside spoiled any thoughts of a Corpus Christi comeback when he recovered a Nick Gatto onside kick attempt at the Sharks 14. Wallace closed out all scoring when he connected with McKinney in the back of the end zone for a 12 yard touchdown.

The Sharks return to American Bank Center on May 9 to host the defending Arena Cup Champion Tennessee Valley Vipers. The Sharks will wear pink jerseys and use pink striped footballs for this game in an effort to bring awareness to the fight against breast cancer. A portion of ticket sales and proceeds generated through a post game jersey auction will be donated to the cause. Kick off is scheduled for 7:05pm. Sharks Fall to Vipers 44-36

Corpus Christi, TX – Corpus Christi failed to score on fourth down and goal from the Tennessee Valley four yard line with 3 seconds remaining in the 4th quarter. Gary Cooper was unable to connect with Nate Fricke who was tightly covered on the play. The last second defensive stop helped the defending Arena Cup Champion Vipers preserve a 44-36 victory over the Sharks at American Bank Center. Tennessee Valley improved to 5-2 while the Sharks fell to 1-5.

The Sharks drew first blood when Nick Gatto drilled a 30 yard field goal. Tennessee Valley responded taking a 7-3 lead on QB Kevin Eakin’s 1 yard touchdown run. The Sharks answered quickly as Cooper connected with Brandon Hussey from 7 yards out. Hussey made a spectacular one handed grab on the play and was recognized by the media for hauling in “The Big Catch of the Game”. The Sharks enjoyed a 10-7 lead after one period of play.

Corpus Christi took a 17-7 2nd quarter lead on Nate Fricke’s 3 yard TD run. Just moments earlier, Sharks DB Dez Abrams forced and recovered a Vipers fumble at the Tennessee Valley 18 yard line.

Tennessee Valley’s Nick Hayes converted a 19 yard field goal to narrow Corpus Christi’s lead to 17-10 with 5:40 to play in the first half. On the ensuing possession, Vipers LB Eric Scott forced a Cooper fumble which was recovered by LB Tyrell Elston. The Vipers tied the score at 17 on Chris Bocage’s 11 yard touchdown run.

The Sharks used trickery from two yards out to gain a 24-17 halftime lead. With seconds remaining in the half, Cooper pitched the ball to Fricke who swept left and then threw across his body to a wide open Jonathan Graham.

The Vipers dominated the 3rd quarter 14-0. Eakin found Juan Merritt in the right corner of the end zone to tie the score at 24. After the Vipers stopped the Sharks offense by forcing a 57 yard field goal attempt by Gatto that fell short, Eakin escaped a collapsing pocket to find Jeremy Grier with a 5 yard TD pass. Grier’s touchdown put the Vipers ahead 31-24.

Cooper scrambled to his right and lobbed a 5 yard touchdown pass to Fricke to open 4th quarter scoring. The Sharks failed to convert the point after touchdown and trailed 31-30.

Vipers WR Bradly Chavez grabbed a one handed touchdown of his own on a 12 yard pass from Eakin. The point after touchdown gave the Vipers a 38-30 lead.

The Sharks answered quickly as Cooper threw a 30 yard rainbow touchdown pass to Hussey who made a nice over the shoulder catch. Corpus Christi attempted to tie the game at 38 but Cooper was tripped by one of his offensive lineman as he went back to pass on the 2 point conversation attempt.

Eakin gave the Vipers an 8 point lead as he again teamed up with Merritt, this time from 7 yards out. Tennessee Valley failed to convert the extra point which kept the Sharks within striking distance on their final drive.

The Sharks will visit Amarillo for a May 16 tilt with the Dusters before returning to American Bank Center on May 25 for a Memorial Day battle with the Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz. Kick off is scheduled for 3:05pm. For ticket information and more information call 361-882-9292 or visit http://www.ccsharks.com.
