Six AFL China nicknames are announced.
Sports Team Ownership Rule Number One: Demographics are no guarantor that people will pay to attend games.
Does anyone remember when MLB, which has far more resources and marketing capabilities, tried growing baseball in mainland China by using the Beijing Olympics as a springboard for a new league? Remember how that all turned out? The 12,000-seat stadium used for Olympic baseball was torn down less then four years after being built and the nation has reverted to a Dark Ages mentality toward the sport.
Fix the Portland franchise in the league you DO have before starting a new league half a world away. I like Butera but he should've spiked AFL China the first week he took over from Jerry Kurz.

For what it is worth MLB is not done in trying to promote baseball in China.

MLB & AFL are really apples to oranges though. I would also argue that MLB has a greater reach with the WBC games than they ever did for the Olympics.
I also know China and other Asian countries are buying Minor League players out of their contracts to come play over seas.
