Are Milwaukee Mustangs headed for Portland?

Remember the Milwaukee Mustangs? They're the Arena Football League franchise that is sitting out this season.

The franchise told the Journal Sentinel last year that they planned to be back at the BMO Harris Bradley Center in 2014. Even Jerry Kurz, the league's commissioner, called the Mustangs a "strong partner."

Now it appears the franchise won't be back. A source tells the Portland Oregonian that the Portland Trail Blazers are in preliminary negotiations with the Arena Football League to relocate a franchise to Portland. And a source told the Journal Sentinel that that franchise could be the Milwaukee Mustangs.

No one affiliated with the Mustangs could be reached for comment. A statement on the team's website says the franchise is looking forward to the 2014 season, but notes it is looking for potential investors.

The franchise, formerly known as the Iron, changed its name to the Mustangs in January 2011. As it happens, Mustangs was the name of the original franchise, which debuted in 1994.

A BMO Harris Bradley Center official said he had not heard from the team owners in some time.

In the meantime, will fans miss arena football? Leave a comment if you'd like.
