Sorry to see Dayton go away.
I really enjoyed the trip to see the Dayton/Erie Explosion playoff
game a few yrs ago. Can't understand why the locals didn't take
to the team.

Probably the same reason they didn't take to the:
Dayton Triangles (NFL)
Dayton Skyhawks (first IFL)
Dayton Warbirds (NIFL)
Dayton Bulldogs (NIFL)
The Marshals (NIFL)
Miami Valley/Dayton Silverbacks (AIFL, CIFL, started in Troy, an outlying city in the Metro Dayton area)

1. Much of the local economy in Dayton is tied to the auto industry, although that's been declining with the auto industry.

2. All within about an hour to 90 minutes drive — University of Dayton, Wright State University, Miami University, Ohio State University, University of Cincinnati, Xavier, Cincinnati Reds, Dayton Dragons, Dayton Dutch Lions, numerous high schools.

3. Venues. Hara Arena is a nice (but very old) building. It's out of the way and no direct way to get there from any part of the area. Nutter Center is owned by Wright State and will no longer allow minor league sports after several teams (mostly indoor football) folded, leaving them holding the bag.

Nutter Center also has its own transportation problems, since the main access point to the arena off of I-675 is shared by both Wright State and Wright-Patterson AFB, making traffic a nightmare (normal traffic in Dayton is bad, but this area, especially at certain times of day, is horrid).

Hobart Arena in Troy is about a 20-minute straight shot north (depending on traffic on I-75, and there's been extensive road construction, especially at the I-70 intersection) from downtown. The Silverbacks did OK there in the first season, but I think the novelty (and lack of wins) turned fans off.

4. These have been low-level indoor football teams on shoe-string budgets with little to no marketing.

Crap marketing done by the team. Nobody cares for a team when they have no idea it's around.

I agree most teams seem to fail because most owners lack the proper
empha$i$ on marketing.
So many of the millinium demographics do not read newspapers. Its just late night TV or the bar scene.
With the families, I think you have to spend on the kids. You know ala the McD clown. Teams needs a fuzzy type character mascot for the kids. Convince the kids and as you may well know they never give up.
They all know when "Disney on Ice" comes to town and the parents are reminded 300x a day. :) .
