The reality of July

Post by Bonhomme2010 » Thu Jul 27, 2017 3:20 pm

In most sports, a new season brings new players. Some come out of the blocks flying and others get acquainted with their new surroundings before feeling comfortable enough to start performing to their abilities. 100 games is more like a marathon than a dash to the finishline. The 2017 season is no different.

At the half-way point of the season, let's have a look at a few of the new players and see if they're sprint or long distance runners.

Batting average
Name............. May.. June.. July (so far)
Boulders
Cody Regis.......434....327..198
Dylan Tice........358....362..329

Jackals
Brian Burgamy..380...292..345
Conrad Gregor..354...307...296
Yariel Vargas....290...125..359
Bryan Joynt......271...337..253

Champions
Ricky Oropesa..362...257..333
Gustavo Pierre.359...256..305

Miners
Jay Baum........462...279..295
Juan Duran.....286...300..230
J.J. Fernandez.154...257..149

Capitales
James McOwen.178...277..308

Aigles
Alexander Ayala.333...327..266

Some players wear down as the season progresses (Johnny Bladel is hitting .176 in his last 10 games, Brian Burgamy .225) but a constant decline is generally a sign that the other teams have adapted and found the soft spots in a player's swing. A few hitters then ajust and bounce back. It doesn't seem to be the case of Cody Regis who's still in the #3 spot of the Boulders batting order (for how long?).

About the Boulders recent dip, they pretty much have stopped hitting as a team (.233 in their last 10 games) They dropped from a .298 batting average in june to .248 in july while the pitchers kept a steady OAVG (opposition batting average) at .268. Joe Maloney has driven in only a total of 9 runs in july out of his 5 home runs and other teams are not pitching around him (only 8 walks... and 26 Ks). Alex Herceg has hit the proverbial wall, part of the growing pains of becoming a professional player... the transition from playing 2 college games a week to 5 games a week which is specially though on a catcher. He might find a way to catch his breath but I'm not holding mine waiting. The new catcher, Daniel Arribas, is hitting nicely at .315 but he can't throw runners out.

At this stage of the season, the most balanced teams are les Capitales and les Champions aven if Hal Lanier (Champions) is still looking for a closer as is Jamie Keefe of the Boulders.
