Massey Ratings are Wrong

Post by Minn Twin » Sat May 21, 2011 12:52 pm

I sent Kenneth Massey an email last week looking for a little respect for my Saints as they had just taken 3 of 4 from the SF Pheasants at home. It was a very playful jab asking for a "little love" as the Saints were only ranked ahead of 3 teams in the entire AA.

How were we rewarded after taking 2 of 3 at Fargo...by dropping us by one point in one of the six rated categories. Seriously???

The sad part is that is seems like he constantly reviewing because the "last update" field changes routinely.

NOTE: If a team wins 5 of 7 games against the CO-#1 ranked teams...why are they so far toward the bottom.

Respect has nothing to do with it. The Massey Rankings are the product of a mathematical formula. It will take a few series (i.e. different opponents) until they have any statistical relevance.

Good point BUT...

If it is based solely on on a mathematical formula, there must be an error. Here's the reason... I can see no changes for any team in any of the 6 categories until the data has enough statistical relevance as you've previously stated. That makes very good sense. The problem is that the Saints dropped in at least 1 category since the start of the season (at least that's all I've noticed). The team with the best record in the league should not go down...

We have a convergence of statistical impossibility and common sense saying..."it just doesn't feel right"

I'm just saying...

There just isn't enough data for the ratings to do their job correctly. Give it a week or two and they'll sort themselves out. The data is pulled directly from this site, so if any of our scores are in error, let us know, and we'll make the correction.
