Why is Richmond in the "Eatern League"?

Post by rasinger » Tue Apr 06, 2010 2:30 am

Richmond is a Southern city and the Eastern League is the Northeastern states, correct? I dont see how it fits. I think it should be in the Southeastern League. If Kentucky is in there, then so should be Virginia. Kentucky is not even as Southern , IMO.

Richmond is in the Eastern League because the Eastern League had a franchise that could move to Richmond.

There is no requirement that league names precisely describe the league...

The International League no longer has any teams outside the USA.
The Pacific Coast League stretches to Nashville, Memphis, and New Orleans.
The Eastern League previously went as far south as Bowie, and now Richmond.
The Texas League is in Arkansas and Missouri.
The Carolina League is in Virginia and Maryland.

There is no Southeastern League.

We've also seen Eastlake, Ohio's (Lake County Captains) in the South Atlantic
League from 2003-2009.

Niles, Ohio (Mahoning Valley Scrappers) is in the New York/Penn league.

Don't even get me started on the ECHL, (with a team in Alaska).

Or the day's when the Atlanta Braves and Falcons were in the Western Division.

Keep in mind that sometimes, it has to do with expansion or relocation.

Richmond is definitely in the East, so I don't get the beef about the Eastern League name. It isn't the Northeastern League.

The Eastern League has had teams in its history in Canton, OH; Quebec City; London, Ontario; and Trois Riveries, PQ. None of those franchises fit the NE mold either.
