Fort Wayne, IN.

The West Michigan Whitecaps robbed Brandon Gomes of his first professional victory with a 2 - 1 win Saturday night in Fort Wayne. Gomes (5' 11", rhp), an early middle round 2007 draft pick our of Tulane, went seven strong innings allowing one run on two hits while striking out four and walked none.

Gomes was opposed by Matt O'Brien (6' 3", rhp) who was hit hard but the Caps defense was remarkable and saved him from giving up a big inning on several occassions. O'Brien was ahead in the count most of the night but he was not fooling the Wizard hitters in his seven innings of work, giving up nine hits, walking three, striking out two, but allowed just one run.

The Caps made the best of their three hits with Jeramy Laster hitting his 14th homerun in the first inning and Scott Sizemore doubled for the 30th time off the outfield wall in the top of the ninth to drive home Gorkys Hernandez with the winning run. The Wizards scored their only run in the third when Cedric Hunter grounded out to second baseman Scott Sizemore scoring Robert Perry.

The win improved the east leading Whitecaps record to 36 - 18, while the Wizards fall to 17 -35. The same two teams will play the series finale tomorrow after which the Caps will travel to Midland and the Wizards go to Dayton.
