Expansion?

Post by SuperSonicStuart » Mon Oct 17, 2005 3:52 am

Does anyone know if there anymore expansion team plans in the NLL? I know for the 2006 season there's going to be the Edmonton Rush and Portland LumberJax but are there any for the other seasons or something?

The NLL seems to have a lot of plans, but it is anyone's guess where their next franchise will come from. Was it last month they were talking about operating an outdoor league to compete with MLL? Last year there were reports that the commissioner was scoping out arenas in some smaller markets for its NLL2 minor league, a concept that was first mentioned several years ago. I believe last year the NLL2 was mentioned when the NLL was checking out The Mark arena in the Quad Cities area.

Hmmmm...

NLL has two very solid franchises in Denver and Toronto and two moderately solid clubs in Philly and Calgary. Minnesota had a good first year. Attendance in the other cities doesn't necessarily suggest that the league is stable enough to dive into other ventures yet. You have to have more than 5 good clubs (organization-wise... not worried about on the rug when it comes to this comparison) to make inroads like the ones suggested.

Poplin, what's the point of you coming into these sports message boards when all you do is saying nothing but a much of crap that has nothing to do with the topic?

My suggestions...

Something close, but not too close, to Denver, which almost sells out Pepsi Center every game. Not sure if Salt Lake City is a target, perhaps it should.

If Portland works out (and there were 10,000 attending a scrimmage the first of this month, on mostly free tickets), Seattle's a must... but Key Arena appears to not be an option (there are rumors that the Sonics are demanding renovations that would force the hockey team out, and the alignment of Key is already unfriendly to hockey). Would the league accept an 8,200-seat arena in Everett? Would renting the Tacoma Dome (bad sightlines) be too overwhelming?

Who would be a good rival for Philly... that wouldn't be too expensive to rent, but JUST big enough to make an impact?

Build rivalries. Work from there.

Winnipeg will not get a team because their arena is owned by the manitoba moose and the team owners have made it clear that no other sports team will share the MTS Center with them.
And that is all the people need to know!
