Roller Derby

Post by Micro67 » Sun May 11, 2008 8:33 pm

Yesterday I went to my first Roller Derby event http://www.atlantarollergirls.com. I expected something at about the same level as pro wrestling, but was pleasantly surprized. It was a legitimate sporting event (i.e. not scripted) and unlike other events I've been too. It clearly has an 'alternative' demographic and was a lot of fun.

Just thought OSC might want to cover it a bit: http://www.wftda.com

This deal is growing roots in a lot of major cities. It's not really professional yet, but give it time.

It also seems to draw a bit of a crowd. I really wonder if the NCAA couldn't start up women's roller derby. That might draw CROWDS, paying for itself, and helping balance scholarships (Title IX considerations) at several schools... provided athletic departments are as concerned about balance as they say they are.

(see, it's often a smoke screen for football programs wanting to seize funds from non-revenue sports)

Anyway, we're just starting to see the occasional inter-city competition come up. It's not going to get covered until leagues that look at least regional in scope are developed.
