Mr. Ernie Harwell

Post by alkalinefan » Wed May 05, 2010 1:08 am

This has nothing to do with minor league sports but I just heard on the Tiger's broadcast that Ernie Harwell passed away.I've been listening to him call ballgames for many years and have enjoyed his voice on radio for many games. He was at the mike in '51 when Thomson hit the "Shot heard round the world"I've met him two times at minor league games(Battle Creek and Lansing) in his later years and he looked good.I'm glad I had those chances to see him.Rest in Peace Mr. Harwell

Harwell did call minor league baseball in the 1940's... and was actually traded by the minor-league Atlanta Crackers to the Brooklyn Dodgers (in return for a catcher) as a replacement for Red Barber when Barber took ill.

He was the embodiment of class, and will be sorely missed.

Maybe he has more to do with minor league sports then we think...

Along with Bruce Martyn calling the Red Wings, he and Harwell kept many a
midwesterner entertained with hockey and baseball in the pre-internet and
pre-cable T.V. days.

I'm not sure where my interest with sports in general would have gone otherwise...
Adios, OSC message boards. (2007-2017)
