Las Vegas, Quebec City advance in NHL expansion process

Post by Fran » Sat Aug 22, 2015 5:44 pm

I understand Quebec but does anyone honestly think Las Vegas can be a good market for the NHL. Money talks so I doubt owners would mind that since they are getting 500 million dollar expansion fee compared to 80 million the last time the NHL expanded. Will the novelty for a NHL team in Vegas eventually wear off after a couple of seasons.

Las Vegas and Quebec City advanced to the third and final formal stage to land NHL expansion franchises.

NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly confirmed the development in an email to the Associated Press on Friday.
Daly referred to the third stage as "the last formal phase," but added, "it does not necessarily constitute the end of the process."

The NHL is taking... well, they historically cash in when someone wants to pay the fee. That's a point against Las Vegas, especially given the prospective owner is older than 70 and nobody knows of a succession plan.

Consider Vegas for a moment, though. They theoretically want something big league, but the NFL won't touch them, the NBA apparently wasn't happy with what happened when Vegas hosted the All-Star Game, and MLB thinks they're too small a market (from baseball's vantage point, this is true). This is the NHL's prime opportunity to anchor some troubled Southwestern markets with a place where they'll basically own the town. At least that's what the optimists think.

This is about being the exclusive big cheese among team sports options in an emerging market that has an established name, FWIW.
