The Orlando Pride will begin its on-field existence with a splash, now that Alex Morgan is coming to town. Orlando acquired Morgan on Monday in a trade with the Portland Thorns, the recently unveiled National Women’s Soccer League expansion franchise announced on its website. Orlando landed Morgan and Kaylyn Kyle from Portland in exchange for the rights to its first expansion draft pick, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2016 NWSL college draft, and one international roster spot for the 2016 and 2017 seasons.

If you had told me at the end of 2013 that the Thorns would trade Alex Morgan and get the first expansion draft pick and the first two picks in the college draft (as opposed to a popular sentiment in Portland where she'd be shipped to Seattle for Megan Rapinoe), and I'd relish that...

...that's saying something.

She's not really a diva, although a bunch of people here come to that consensus. She is a competitor. Just that there were times in 2013 and 2014 (when she was around) where she always wanted the long ball or the lob played to her. Sometimes, it didn't seem like she was part of the team.

Of course, with 2014 and 2015 injuries and World Cup commitments, she wasn't with the team way too often. So I tend to hope Orlando gets a chance to see her now that they have her.

There ARE a group of fans upset by all this, wondering why the Timbers couldn't make a move for Servando Carrasco and keep Morgan in town. Eh, no. Morgan had the clout in this scenario anyway.

The expansion draft is next Monday. The rumored stipulation in a different trade is that Seattle is supposed to leave Megan Klingenberg available so the Thorns can draft her. That'll help. There's also the rumor that Lindsay Horan is supposed to leave her French team and sign with the Thorns... we'll see. Heck, it's the Thorns, theoretically they can afford Marta. We'd settle for bringing Vero Boquete back. As such, this isn't the last you've heard from the Thorns in this offseason. All the better if the Thorns surprise us with Nadine Kessler.
