PALM BEACH PHANTOMS FOLD;OWNER BOLTS TO UIFL TEAM

(Holiday) – The United Football Federation (UFF) has confirmed that the Palm Beach Phantoms adult amateur football organization has closed business operations for the remainder of the 2013 season.

*

Although UFF officials would not comment any further about the abrupt folding of the Palm Beach Phantoms organization, Amateur Football Digest has learned that former Phantoms team organizer and head coach, Avion Brown Hale, has accepted a similar position with the Sarasota Thunder of the 7-team Ultimate Indoor Football League (UIFL). The information was confirmed by UIFL league owner, David Reichert. It is unclear at this time if Hale's new position with the Thunder had anything to do with the folding of his Phantoms organization, but considering that both teams play practically during the same time period from this Saturday forward, it's likely it had some significance in his overall decision.

*

The Thunder are a new expansion team in the UIFL this season and are scheduled to begin play this Saturday, March 9th, in*Lakeland*against the Raiders. A view of the team’s website displays an all ‘road’ schedule for*Sarasota*that concludes on May 10th against the Florida Tarpons. However, there is no mention of Hale as its head coach. The UIFL is in its third season and is based out of*Fort Myers,*Florida.

*

This is the second consecutive season Hale has folded business operations on behalf of the Palm Beach Phantoms as a member of the UFF. He has a history of such activity dating back to the 2009 season when he folded the Palm Beach Titans of the now defunct Florida State Football League (FSFL) near mid-season.

*

Said an anonymous source, “It’s a shame anybody would allow him (Hale) to have a team in their league if you know his past in this game.”

*

In the spring of 2011 Hale, then known as Avion Brown, was forced to fold another version of the Palm Beach Titans. Although this time around, it was in the sport of basketball at the professional minor league level as a proposed member of the Continental Basketball League (CBL). The ‘round-ball’ Titans never truly got off the ground under Hale’s direction and CBL officials reportedly withdrew their acceptance of the Titans’ franchise application to*CBL under his name.

*

As early as this past fall, Hale attempted to enter his Phantoms football team into the Southeast Football League (SEFL) but was rejected upon a vote by their member teams. According to two separate team organizers that have teams in the SEFL and were present at the meeting when the vote was held, there was a concern over Hale’s commitment to the Phantoms and the possibility of him folding the organization as he did while in the UFF in 2012.

*

“We were not willing to risk taking his team in after what happened in the other (UFF) league”, said one anonymous team organizer. “It was far too much of a risk in the minds of most that were at the meeting.”

*

SEFL officials had no comment on Hale or the Palm Beach Phantoms, citing a league policy where no statements are made about non-member teams or their personnel that does not directly affect their organization.

*

UFF officials are now forced to pick up the pieces of the mess now left over by Hale and his Phantoms organization. According to league officials, member teams that have the Palm Beach Phantoms remaining on their schedule will have that game awarded to them as a ‘forfeit’ victory.
