The Tampa Bay Rowdies have bolstered their attack with the addition of dynamic, creative midfielder Freddy Adu, the club announced Tuesday, pending International Transfer Clearance.
The Rowdies and Adu are a perfect fit. Adu, now 26 years of age, with his prime playing career still ahead of him, presents plenty of upside for the Rowdies. In Tampa Bay, he is reunited with head coach Thomas Rongen, arguably the coach for whom he has played his best soccer in the past.
Were pleased to have Freddy Adu join our club, principal owner Bill Edwards said. Our goal is to make the Rowdies the most successful club in North American soccer and this is just another step towards achieving that. Ive spoken to Thomas about signing Adu and he is as excited as I am about this opportunity.

DaveRemember Freddy Adu? Remember the guy that was supposed to save American soccer? Four months ago he signed with Kuopion Palloseura, in the Finnish first division.
As you might suspect, the Finnish first divisionthe Veikkausliigaisnt particularly strong. The average monthly wage is just $2,000even the first division players are barely full-time professionalsand according to UEFAs methodology it is the 35th best league in Europe. It is ranked behind Azerbaijan, Moldova, Georgia, and Kazakhstan, among 30 other better leagues.
But heres the thing: at this point Freddy Adu isnt even good enough for a mid-table team in the 35th best league in Europe. According to a Finnish soccer blogger World Soccer Talk interviewed earlier this week, Adu is clearly out of shape, and the coach wont play him even though the board would like him too. Instead, Adu has been playing for KuPS reserve team, which plays in the fourth division of the 35th best league in Europe.
Here is a good article on why Freddy Adu decided to play with Tampa Bay.
