Rockford Update

Post by wasteland » Thu Sep 23, 2010 2:36 am

Rockford, Illinois-The indoor soccer season isn't far off. We're still not sure if we'll see any soccer here this fall and winter.

The Rockford Rampage of the MISL was put up for sale this summer and it remains for sale. Current team partner and team president Oscar Albuquerque tells WTVO that his ownership group has a prospective buyer it's negotiating with. It's a local group that would keep the team in Rockford.

Albuquerque says if a deal goes through it will be up to the new owners whether or not the team would play this coming season or wait until next year.

ROCKFORD — The Rockford Rampage have ceased operations for the upcoming Major Indoor Soccer League season while the team continues its search for new ownership.

In an official statement released Monday, the league announced that the Rampage ownership group, Rampage-Futbol LLC, has decided not to participate in the 2010-11 season. La RaZa de Monterrey and the Philadelphia KiXX also will not return.

“The entire management group and I appreciate Monterrey, Philadelphia and Rockford’s years of service to the MISL and the game of professional indoor soccer,” MISL Commissioner David Grimaldi said in the statement.

Rampage president and founder Oscar Albuquerque said in an e-mail that the team has been negotiating with a potential buyer since July.

“The interested party is presenting a letter of intent to us soon,” Albuquerque said.

The asking price for the Rampage has been set at $250,000. Albuquerque added that the current bidder intends to keep the team in Rockford if a sale goes through.

“The interested party always has stated that they wanted to purchase the franchise and play in the 2011-12 (MISL) season,” Albuquerque said.

Albuquerque also said that the United Soccer Leagues has expressed interest in the Rampage playing in its new professional indoor league, the I-League, which is set to begin in 2011.

“We have told (USL) that we are awaiting an offer,” Albuquerque said. “And if that does not materialize, then we will talk and see.”

The MISL had a busy offseason, adding three teams to replace Rockford, Philadelphia and Monterrey. The Chicago Riot, Missouri Comets and Omaha Vipers will join the Milwaukee Wave and Baltimore Blast for the 2010-11 season, which begins Nov. 12.

Former Rampage head coach Jeff Kraft will serve as the Riot’s head coach and director of team operations.

The Rampage began operations in 2005 as the Rockford Thunder in the now-defunct American Indoor Soccer League.

Last season, the Rampage failed to make the MISL playoffs after finishing 7-13 and in last place.
The Rampage averaged just over 1,000 fans the past two seasons playing at the MetroCentre.

Albequerque was wrong in saying "The PASL is a more stable league!" What he should've said was "The MISL's attendance requirements are too high and their teams are too competitively......financially."

In layman's terms , what he probably meant to say was "The MISL would probably mop the floor with us in that league, so to make sure we stay afloat financially, let's join the 'weaker' league!!"

LOL!!! :D

No.

The more accurate quote is "MISL is unsustainable given the limited interest and higher expenses."

Can we trade this bunch for some better Baltimore fans?

That makes zero sense. You have the MISL with Milwaukee and Baltimore with a rotating cast of fly by night expansion teams. Rockford had a 5 year history before going dark, with no known late/missing payments to vendors/players/venues and all games played. I would think this is the type of franchise the MISL would want. Oh well.

What, exactly, are the "MISL's attendance requirements?" What's the number?

Financially competitive? What are you smoking, Trish? MISL teams all lose money.

What Trish neglects to say is that the Rockford Rampage was in the MISL championship all of three years ago. Against the Blast. So, yeah, mop the floor.

What IS it about people from Baltimore? Really? (Or "person from Baltimore," could be.)
Old enough to remember when bashing the ABA was fun.
