MASL drops Hartford team

Efforts to bring a professional soccer team to Hartford were dashed Wednesday night when the Major Arena Soccer League dropped Hartford City FC, telling the team's coach they were troubled by a grand jury investigation into the club's owners.

Coach Paul Wright said league Commissioner Kevin Milliken called him Wednesday night to say the team had been removed from the indoor soccer league's schedule — just 11 days before the club was to play its inaugural game at the XL Center. A posting on Hartford City FC's website announced: "The MASL has decided to not go forward with the 2015-2016 Season. We look forward to bringing HCFC into the future."

The team's future has been in doubt since questions were raised about the financing of an outdoor soccer stadium being developed by companies controlled by the team's owners, James Duckett Jr. and Mitch Anderson. Wright said a new group of local investors had agreed to take over the team and go forward with the season. But he said league officials remained concerned about the criminal investigation announced last week.

"They thought it was best to put it on hold," Wright said. But he added the league was open to reinstating the team for the 2016-2017 season.
