First of all, there are currently a few defunct teams, do they still have Dleague franchise rights as they could be sold and started up again? Second of all, if I was a rich 100 millionaire, I'd approach the NBA about purchasing 4-5-6 franchises find 4-5-6 mid-sized markets and start the franchises ...
That's a big problem in all minor league sports. If you don't have a local owner your team is always subject to a midnight move. Out of town owners just don't care about local fans and how they may have poured their hearts and pocketbooks out for years.
Heck sometimes it doe...

The problem with Colorado is that they are way too close to Denver.... so they compete with Broncos, Aves and Nuggets.... plus there is like 3-4 minor league hockey teams in the region..... If they'd move to Casper WY or Rapid City SD they'd have 3 times the attendance, more sponsership... travel wo...
One can never be 100% sure, but I believe the Knicks are getting their own franchise and the Kings will share Bakersfield with GS. I don't believe the Bighorns will move east.
The NBA business model needs to be updated, players need to be vented prior to signing huge contracts. Losing 1 mil per year operating a minor league club could save the parent clubs 10's of mil annually after you factor in the savings clubs will receive based on developing prospe...

If the teams can stay afloat short term the fact that they will have owners who are active in the community should help.... still wonder if there isn't more to it because it kinda seems like a quick sell.... I had heard for example that the Maloof family was interested in buying the team in Reno... ...
