The PIFL/IPFL's second Honolulu-based team, the Hammerheads began play in 1999, taking over for the Honolulu Hurricanes. After losing two of their first three games, Hawaii went 9-4 the rest of the way to lock down second place in the league and a playoff berth. In the postseason they walloped third seed Mississippi, 36-16, and then surprised the top-ranked Texas Terminators, 28-13, to win the IPFL title. Unfortunately, they would not get a chance to repeat, as mounting bills killed the franchise the following offseason.
